A little back ground: Summer 2014 some friends joined us to BWCA, their 1st time there and we went to Johnson Falls. I'm not sure but I don't think I've seen them since(life just gets in the way), anyway I will be seeing them next weekend and I was thinking of giving them a print from our visit to the falls, one of those canvas jobs with the "gallery wrap", and of all the shots I have of the falls this is the only one thats a decent shot and has enough real estate to wrap the frame. This was not my first choice but neither is it my last. :) So what do you think, if someone gave this photo to you as a memento of your trip are you jazzed about it or just sort of... meh?

it's a beautiful shot of the falls and a nice thought as a gift to your pals. not sure if you have determined the size canvas you'll use. this shot screams, "make me really big so everyone can see me!", but it also might be nice to have a smaller 5x7 (roughly) that can be set in a stand on a desk so they see it every day at work (if they sit at a desk). another nice thought might be a cd or flash drive they can install on their computer to have a slide show/screen saver of photos of the trip.
no matter what you decide, it's a wonderful way to let your friends know you think about them even if you don't see them very often.

Thanks Kanoes,I was thinking of going the canvas route because it doesn't need a frame, but it certainly could be framed if they chose to.... but then again it wouldn't have glass or a mat so then it wouldn't match other traditional prints..... Arrrggh!! this is why I never print anything, too many choices!! Plus if I got a traditional print I could use the photo I really wanted because it wouldn't need room for the wrap.

Gallery wrapped canvas prints are the thing....that's what I would do
And as Mocha said large, but not too large that the quality and sharpness suffers.
I'm sure your friends will love it.

@Mocha & Mooseplums, I'm thinking of 11x14 or 11x16 big enough to be big but not obnoxious. I'm going to be trying Bay Photo and let them do the color correction for their printer cuz I'm always a little unsure of my abilities in that department.

Well, since nobody said they hated it I pulled the trigger on an 11x16 gallery wrapped canvas. I wanted to get the order in before the holiday hoping to get it before next weekend (8th) which shouldn't be a problem. I'll let you know how it comes out, thanks for the help.

I was too late to the draw. I hate canvas prints which are kind of like fake paintings. Your beautiful, tack sharp photo will be a muddled mess IMO. Some people like them though.
For my money I would get a metal print. I get mine from Magnachrome with the "Euro Frame" framing option.

Although pricey, you might use the same image to get different types of prints to see what you like best.

Thanks Jerold, this is a bit of an experiment, I'll see how it comes out, but I won't know until I try it. I almost went for the metal prints and if I don't love the canvas may give them a shot , I am worried a bit about the softness of the canvas but there is a lot of softness in the water in this image so maybe it won't be too bad on canvas.... we shall see.

Well exposed highlights glow on a metal print. The dynamic range seems high as well so the highlights don't clip. Expensive for large prints, not so bad for 16x20. Plus, the framing and glazing costs are integrated into the cost of the print which is a big factor.

quote redoleary: "I got the print yesterday and I must say I'm quite chuffed with it. The colors are really vibrant and the sharpness is better than just acceptable. I see more of these in my future. "
did you take a photo of it so we can all see???

That turned out gorgeous. I'd be honored to have a friend make something like that for me.
This thread is a "why didn't I think of that" moment for me. I've had lots of my favorite shots blown up, framed, and hung on the wall but this is a unique and cool way to showcase a favorite place. I'll be trying this soon.
If anyone is looking for a different idea I have experimented with this for a picture gift for my wife from a trip we took. I was pleased with it.

quote kanoes: "I may have missed it....where did you get that done?"
I had it done at Bay Photo. It got all the way from California to Michigan in just a couple days and was well packaged. I'll definitely be using them in the future
