JCavenaugh was kind enough to pass along a Phoenix Poke Boats Vagabond a couple years ago & it's seen lots of use by the Scout troop that I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster for.

Last weekend our troop had all our watercraft including the Poke out on the Kickapoo River in WI and had a great time. About 30-45 minutes before the end of the trip I came upon the two Scouts who were using the Poke trying to recover the boat - they had managed to completely sink it hull side up in the river. Prior to getting to the scene the Scouts, not knowing any better, were trying to lift the boat from the bottom using the bow & stern instead of rolling it from the middle.
Both the bow & stern now have cracks & creases in the hull. The good news is that the boat remained watertight and was able to be paddled to the finish. The bad news is that the cracks seem to have completely severed the outer layer of fiberglass.

The hull was pretty UV weathered and faded from several years of sitting unused before I got it. I had been planning on cleaning the hull & putting a fresh coat of paint on it before it got damaged. Now I'm wondering if my plan should also include re-glassing the entire hull before or after it gets painted. The area around the cracks seems to be fairly brittle and I wonder if the boat would benefit from an added layer of protection on the entire bottom.

I know, pictures are worth 1000 words and unfortunately I do not have any photos right now. I'll try to get some in the coming weeks.

I'd start by just fiberglassing the effected areas. Then paint.

Holy cow! That old boat has been taking abuse for at least 30 years! It's been used by young kids in a local drainage pond, in the shallows of the DuPage and Fox Rivers, dragged over rocks and sand, and pulled up various banks, and stowed outdoors uncovered for years.
I sure hope you can revive it.

Hey, mirth...you can email Tom Wilson at pokeboat@pokeboat.com. I bet he knows what to do.

Thanks Jim. It's gonna be a winter project for sure. The troop also owns an OT Loon kayak that was stored outside and has 'gnawing damage' to the bow stem bad enough to go completely thru to the inner foam core.

I did reach out to Phoenix at the same email address shortly after the boat got damaged and they never replied. I'll try again once I'm closer to wanting to do the repairs. Too much stuff going on in life at the moment.
