I'm headed through Sarah Lake next week from Prairie Portage. Does anyone have any information on water levels and portages for this route??

We came back that way on June 11 from Kashahpiwi. Water levels are really high and the portages we took were well defined. The Quetico Ranger said the water hasn't been this high since 1968 when the PP dam broke.
The portage from Bayley Bay into Burke is sand - very nice. Keep a close watch of the wind on BB and North Bay.
Have a great trip.

Did you go across the portage out of the south end of Kahshahpiwi going towards Side Lake? I have heard that it can be a boggy mess.

The portage from Side to Kash is an unholy mess, unless you enjoy wading thru thigh deep stinking mud for 100 yards. .

When was this picture taken? This year? I wondered if it was better this spring with the high water levels.

Beemers photo is from this week in June 07, I would think water levels should be different now.

On June 10th we took the Yum Yum Portage. While wet on the Yum Yum Lake side and in a few spots along the 220 rods, it was relatively easy and offered very scenic views and vistas. Yes I said vista so that should offer you an idea of the elavation. The group voted to take this portage because it had a name and we wanted to know why. Also, I had seen Beemer's picture and didn't want to do that. We similar experiences on the route into Kash. We came over from Agnes via Silence through Traut lakes. Really, really hard.

Zig,

I took the Kashapiwi-Yum Yum portage last year during a dry time and the low spot west of the big sloping rock was ankle sucking mud, how did you ever make it through this year???
Vista is a good word for that scenic over look, it reminded me of a mini grand canyon.

Jman - I think I know the spot you mention. Someone had laid several logs along this area. All the portages offered challenges this year.

I've done PP to Sarah twice and there a a few up a down portages around 90 rods that are pretty tough as you get around Side Lake. Take your time and bring lots of water to drink. It was hot the last time I did these (solo) and it was grueling.
