Does anybody have any information on this portage since the blowdown in July? I was planning on going in there tomorrow, but someone here in Ely said it might not have been opened up yet by the forest service. Spoke to one outfitter who had no information either way but suggested no news is probably good news. Anybody been through there recently? Thanks.
I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, . . , and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. Thoreau
I'd call the Forest Service in Ely on Monday (if you can wait that long) and ask them if they cleared it. The person answering the phone probably won't know but with a little prodding can find out from the folks who have been doing the clearing after the storms.
Generally speaking, I think they've cleared the portages, but this one is so little used it's possible it was skipped. For the same reason, I wouldn't count on "no news is good news." On the other hand, I don't think the storm did a ton of damage in that particular area - but I could be wrong.
I will say, this is one of my least favorite portages ever - and I generally like long hard portages. Of course, we did it single portaging when it was 90 degrees in July, so maybe I didn't give it a fair shake . . .
