Sitting down here in the TC (in NE MPLS we have absolutely zero snow and ice on the lakes is pulling away from shore) its hard to imagine that conditions would be favorable or even safe for a mid March trip. But I know 200+ miles north it looks a lot different. Anyone who's been out or lives up the Gunflint care to speculate about how the ice is going to hold up?

Thanks!

I can't say what has happened since then, (or what will happen ) but this photo of Mayhew Lake was taken on Tuesday afternoon after it rained all day Monday.

I would guess most lakes up there (mid Gunflint) look the same? Of course it's been a few days so...

20+ Inches of ice on the lakes in Ely and the Gunflint, and as much snow as you'd ever want!

Its a winter wonderland about Hinkley and North.

You will have plenty of good ice unless it gets warm and stays above freezing most nights between now and then, which I don't think it is supposed to get that warm. I was walking on Gunflint lake last night and it is a big sheet of ice. Hopefully we get a little snow again so you can travel on the lakes without slipping and falling every step.

Just came from Clearwater Lake. Over 2 feet of ice on the lake - and maybe 1 inch of snow on the lake, and 4 inches on land.

Ely has WAY more snow.

That is a fun lake to ski on in the winter.

I saw a report from a friend on Trout lake from the past weekend. The lakes look like there is very patchy snow on top. Looks like Ely got some snow last night, but the lakes do not look like they would be fun to cross. With a wind, your toboggan would be blowing off to the side.

It looks like snow is falling now, so all of that could change quickly, though the 10 day forecast doesn't show much snow.

Headed up Friday for 2 nights and recruited a friend who I'm really excited to catch up with-it's all coming together!
