Lakes: Landing Crane, Blueberry, stream, unnamed lake, stream, Sylvia, Bilko, and Veronica. Travel Distance 22km. Portages 9 for a total 2040m, and numerous liftovers and dams.
Traveled SW thru Landing Crane and then straight east to the portage to Blueberry. 325m portage and continue across the very south edge of blueberry lake. One short portage and then south thru the 1st small stream. A couple small portages and west across a unnamed lake. I have always really enjoyed paddling these very small twisting waterways and am looking forward to the next 4.5 km of paddling. I mean more like 12km. It is only 4.5 on the map but with the continuous switchbacks, banks barely wide enough for the canoe, grass so tall you can’t see over it even standing in the canoe, 2 muddy portages with poor landings on both ends, numerous liftovers and dams, losing perspective of where you are or how far you have come because of the limited horizon, I was elated when we reached Sylvia Lake. Just as we reach open water we get hit with a shower and the wind chases us to shore. The squall passes in 20-30 minutes and we are off to the last portage to Bilko Lake where we are going to spend the night. There are 2-3 fishing boats pulled up and tied off on the landing. A fly in fish camp is located on Dowswell Lake just outside the park. By following a stream from Dowswell to Bilko and one portage to Veronica, I am sure this is a nice day trip for those anglers. The portage is listed at 675m and drops down to the stream a couple of hundred meters before reaching the actual lake. We must have continued on the “winter trail” and came out onto the lake. Albert had marked one campsite on Bilko not far from the portage, but we could not find it. After searching a couple of times and scouring the rest of the shoreline it was decided to move on to Veronica. Water levels are very high this year and we bypassed the portage and paddled the one campsite on out maps. A pretty site on a small point and by moving a couple of down trees we were able to get both tents put up. Camp set up, supper and Jeff and I decided to go out and fish while Jim and Gary pontificated on shore. We caught a handful of walleyes and decided to head in.
