Day 3 of 10
Tuesday, June 21, 2011 We break camp and are off to Lonely lake. Fighting a stiff east wind it is good we are on sheltered waters. Little jean into Yeh and then the big portage to Lonely. Except we cannot follow the portage, it clearly just makes a loop back to Yeh. At one end there is logs making and X with "NO PORTAGE" carved into one of them. I spend a lot of time scouting with my compass, heading dead east over a tremendous amount of blown down trees and then going both north and south to find the trail. While doing this the wind becomes so strong trees start falling and after a really big one crashes down 100 feet away we give up. Back to Yeh and back to Jean with a tremendous wind at our backs. Before we portage to Burntside we walk the portage to check the wind on the other side and it is ferocious. Whitecaps rolling across our path and we give up and go back the Jean side and take a campsite just north of the portage. Evidently this has happened before. We take an unsuccessful fishing trip over to Ceph and as we hit the sack it starts to rain.
