Day One:

Mom and Dad stayed overnight in the cabin and left for Nebraska after breakfast. The day was overcast, looking like rain, and sort of windy. We tried to go out in the canoe but the wind on Fenske Lake was enough to make us uncomfortable, so we didn’t stay out for a long time. But Robert is a good paddler!

He found a little tiny toad on the ground by the path to the lake. There is a always a lot to look for when you are staying at a cabin.

After some exploring around the resort area, we decided to drive up North Grassy Lake Road and see where the Mudro Lake Entry Point to the BWCA was located. This was where Grandpa had started his fishing trip with Ramsey a couple of years ago. It was a long drive on a gravel road, and just as we got there it started to sprinkle. But that didn’t last long.

After we looked at that place, we thought, “Why not turn down this little road and see what Grassy Lake looks like?” That turned out to be more of an adventure than we had expected. The road was a two-track, and very bumpy. Finally we came to a portage to Grassy Lake. Robert and Grandpa walked a long time on the portage but they never found Grassy Lake—just a lot of mosquitoes! But Robert did get to see what a BWCA portage looks like. Unfortunately, Grandpa didn’t take any pictures. This is the two-track road to Grassy Lake.

We went to Ely and bought a bunch of groceries for our cabin week. We also stopped at DQ and bought ice cream. Robert likes lots of sprinkles on his ice cream cone.

Then, since it was sort of rainy, we went back to the cabin and played games. A game of Skip-Bo was great fun—at least for Robert! He beat us in three rounds and it was a shut-out: 650 to zip! That made him smile for a long time!

It rained all afternoon and evening. A light, soaking rain. We were hoping for a sunny day in the morning.

This cabin had a bubbly tub. It wasn’t really a whirlpool like a Jacuzzi, but it had bubblers in the floor of the tub that made a lot of really cool bubbles. Grandma took some neat photos, but they aren’t going on the Internet.

It was very peaceful and quiet at Spruce Cabin. No stereo or TV. Quite a change from Robert’s usual environment, but he went off to sleep right away.
