Day 6 of 10
Wednesday, June 05, 2013 We decided to move back toward Sturgeon and explore that area. On the way toward the Sturgeon River we were warned by a gentleman camped on a nearby point that there was a strong current and that we should portage around. Since we had come up that way a few days ago and there had been no rain, we figured to ride it down to Sturgeon and that is what we did. As we were nearing the entrance to the river I made a point to warn Sam and Tim in the other canoe to stay away from the outside bank in case there were sweepers sticking out. Don and I went first and very carefully navigated the slower inside corners keeping a nice easy line downstream. Not a big deal but definitely downhill and pretty quick. What took us an hour or more to come up a few days before, took about five minutes to go down. As we neared the end of the run I heard a loud, WHEEEEeeee from behind and turned around. Don and Sam were about ten feet off the outside bank in the fastest water and bouncing down the waves. Good grief. Nobody listens to me! Once we were on Sturgeon we found a very nice campsite on the east side of the lake. There is a site marked on the McKenzie maps on the last southern point on the east side but that is not a very nice site. There is one further north on a small point that is very nice and that is where we stayed. We also climbed the hill right at the entrance to Sturgeon Narrows and checked out that site but it is a pain to get up to and could only really handle one tent. Not the best pads but a nice view. After we set up camp we went fishing and did marginally well jigging off a cliff south of camp and we caught fish there after dinner too. It was pizza night so the fish all went back into the water.
