Day 2: Chatterton, McDougall

Sunday dawns very quiet and grey, and there’s no doubt that there will be rain at some point today. We fish around different points and islands for walleyes on Chatterton, picking up a few while we keep one eye on the skies for a downpour. We’re learning how to safely fish three guys out of one canoe with being in each other’s way. The rain doesn’t come, so we decide to hop over the short portage into McDougall Lake, which I have heard plenty of good things about with respect to the trout fishing. The gray clouds are looking more angry, and by the time I catch the first trout, there’s no doubt it’s coming. A drizzle starts, and then turns into a full-blown downpour, but we’re getting bites.

Well, we’re already soaked and are catching trout, so why not just keep sticking it out? We take a lunch break at 33G (site is not marked correctly on Paddle Planner—it’s on the east shore of that little bay), and build a small fire to warm our fingers. The rain is showing no signs of letting up, so we fish the rest of the evening on McDougall, each of us catching 3 trout. The largest went about 27”, and we stringer up one of the 22” ones for dinner. We slosh back across the portage, get to our campsite on Chatterton, and spend the rest of the night under a tarp listening to the wind and rain howl.
