Saturday, July 01, 2017 Day 7 Saturday. Emerald, High Man, That Man. 2 portages We’re moving to That Man or This Man today. We have coffee , leftover tea, cocoa, cereal with Nido milk and dried blueberries. I figure we need hydration for the move. Get packed up, retrieve the shovel and toilet seat and paddle over to the portage to High Man. It’s got a bit of a reputation. We push, pull the canoe up the start of the trail and Dan carries it on through. I get up with a pack and find a nice stick on the way up to use as a hiking pole. It’s a pretty steep incline with a few roots and rocks to grab onto. I don’t remember the rest of the trail being all that bad. We sort of triple portaged it, I think its only about 45 rods, but we had to stage most of the stuff on top of the hill before carrying over. We paddle through High man and get to the next portage trail. It’s pretty steep going down but my stick helps out. We get to That Man and decide if we find a campsite we like we’ll stay. The island site Northeast of the portage is rated as a 5 star site. I don’t initially like as well as our last site, but it’s ok. The firepit is kind of down a hill and there’s trees around that obstructs the views of the lake, but it’s big and there’s a great place to pull the canoe into a clearing on the south side of the island and plenty of spots for the latrine. We eat lunch, (flavored tuna packets, and crackers, m&ms.) Dan hates the ranch flavored tuna. I offer him my lemon pepper tuna, but he didn’t like it either. Note: next time no tuna packets. Bear bag trees are hard to find. We put them near the tent with the bottoms about 5 feet off the ground. Most of the trees are too close together to get them clear of another tree. We get camp set up and locate the latrine site. It starts to rain again and we work for quite a while trying to get the tarp to cover the area we want covered. Finally go with turning it upside down to put the loops on the bottom and running a rope under it. We tie out the ends to various trees and a post someone had left. It stops raining about the time we get it rigged up. We get water for filtering and hand washing and rig bear ropes. Start rehydrating the chicken, celery and mushrooms for the chicken and rice. Make tea and salads. Sat on the small piece of Tyvek and leaned back against the seating logs. Backrests are hard to come by without taking chairs. I think we had enough stuff as it was, though. We spend the rest of the night cleaning up dishes and loading the packs. The rain stopped though, so we could pull back the tarp. This site had lots of different kinds of mushrooms.
