Sunday, July 02, 2017 Day 8 Sunday. That Man Get up and have Oatmeal. Decide to go up the creek to No Man and walk the portage to This Man to say we made it and spend some time fishing on No Man. The creek has a lot of trees across it and it winds around a lot. Some of the trees are sawed off, but we have to duck down under others. The creek is crystal clear though and we can see a lot of fish swimming off. There’s one tree near No Man that is down in the water. It looks like people with packs unload them and carry around on the bank to the other side of the tree. We get the canoe over with a few curse words and some bickering. We get to No Man and paddle to what we think is the portage. It’s on the wrong side of the creek, but it’s obviously a trail. It’s pretty long and a bit unused looking with some old stoves and metal cots near the end. It doesn’t feel quite right but we get to This Man and take some pictures. We look at the map and realize it should have been a 12 rod portage. We just didn’t see it from the way we came in. We go back to No Man and fish off the point of the campsite. We didn’t get out to see it. Dan caught a walleye off the point. We continued to get bites and a few fish, including one really big one over near the rock wall on the way back down the lake. We kept one for dinner and decided to go back down the creek to camp. We find that it’s a lot harder to go down stream with sweepers than up. I named the creek Separation Creek. We finally get out and fish down to camp. I catch another walleye and let it go. We get back to camp and I tell Dan if he wants to clean the fish he can just cut off one filet and we’ll worry about the bones after we cook it. We had spices to do a kind of blackened fish. I rehydrate too many hash browns and we have corn again. Also rehydrate dried apricots and blueberries for the cobbler. We’re worried about fuel so we put foil inside and outside the jello mold oven to cook on the fire. We have a light weight disposable mesh grill, reinforced with pieces of wire coat hanger we made at home to put it on. We thought we might use it more due to no fire grates in Quetico, but didn’t really use it before. It takes Dan a long time with the fish cleaning. I’m usually the one to clean the fish. He thinks it would have been easier to filet both sides, but you lose a lot that way. It works out ok though. Again, spend a long time cleaning up. I’m not sure if the involved meals are worth it, but we enjoy eating well, so I guess it’s a tradeoff.
