Day 8 of 9
Monday, July 03, 2017 Day 9 Monday. Moving to Sheridan. I got up before full sunrise and took pictures. Got down bear bags and made hot water for drinks and oatmeal. Dan finished packing his stuff and then I packed mine. We fished a little off the site. I caught a tree and a walleye, Dan caught a bluegill. We finished packing up and paddled to Sheridan portage. We took pictures of some loons along the way, and started to notice a lot of trees down on the way into the portage. The portage is about 145 rods or longer due to the blowdowns in the area. This area got hit hard fairly recently. We could hear the creek, but never really saw it, except for a small lake about the middle. It was a pretty tough portage due to a lot of little loops around downed trees and some smooth slanted rock faces and a boggy area at the end. I was determined to pull my weight and carry 2 of the packs, paddles, fishing poles and my dry bag. (double portaging). Dan had found me a new stick so I used on 1 carry and the fishing poles and paddles to steady myself on the next. I loaned Dan the stick when he carried his pack. He said it helped. I made it to the end of the portage on both carries without asking for help although I did stop and prop up the pack on a couple of rocks along the way. Not sure if my age is catching up with me, (57), I wasn’t in good shape this time or the portages were that much worse, but the portages really kicked our butts this time. We load up and paddle the short distance to the Sheridan campsite. It’s really steep and the sun is hitting the firepit pretty fully, but we decide it’s good enough. We had put all the stuff for lunch together and pulled it out and made grilled cheese sandwiches. The stove is acting up and it took a while. The sun on the firepit area is brutal. It is reflecting off the water onto the slope as well, so it’s hotter than it should be. We eat under the trees and decide to take advantage of the heat and take a shower. We fill the sun shower and put it in the sun and set up camp. Locate place for latrine. It’s like having a 4 story house. The water is down a level and the latrine was up a couple of levels. We gather firewood, put up hammock. I liked it, even though the reviews weren't that great. It was a pretty neat site. Fish and hang around camp for the afternoon and take showers before dinner. We make ovaeasy, cheese and bacon sandwiches and cup o soup for dinner. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. OvaEasy eggs were a hit. We got packed up some for our trip out the next day, burned the tp bag and had hot chocolate on the point after dark with the thermacell. The mosquitoes were getting pretty bad. We saw something in the water and shone the light on it and saw a huge snapping turtle sticking its head out of the water. Put up bear bags an hit the tent about 11:30.
