6/21/80 Day Three:

Light rain at the wake-up (5 AM). It blew over quickly, but was still very windy. We decided to take a layover day. [This was our sixth canoe trip, and I think it was the first time we ever took a layover day. At any rate, they were rare for us in the early years.)

There was a rainbow at 6:30--brief, but very bright.

The nights have been warm, almost too warm to zip up. I'm stiff, but don't really hurt anywhere.

Today we really shook it up! Had instant soup and crackers for breakfast! Hiked and explored the island, then had eggs and biscuits for our lunch. We were sharing a book to read, so we each read for a little while. It is HOT!!

We bathed. [Yes, this was back in the time when we bathed in the lake with Ivory soap.]

It was a gorgeous summer day, but really hot for paddling or portaging. Nice to just spend the day in camp. We goofed off in the tent, napped, and relaxed for awhile.

We had an early supper, accompanied by some Canada Jays that wanted to share it with us. [I didn't note what we enjoyed for supper except for "Irish Coffee". That must have been the important part.]

After supper we paddled around the island (Island 41). It's a long way around. The water was very calm. I photographed the rock in the lake and some reflections. There were hardly any canoes or boats out, and it seemed very peaceful and quiet.

Some notes about food: F/D green beans--Yuk! I should have remembered that marshmallows melt. [Probably a bag with a sticky mess.]

We were feeling great and ready to get back to canoeing. Bed around 9 PM.
