Snowbank to Spider Lake PMA Loop
by backpackingZombie

Trip Type: Paddling Canoe
Entry Date: 08/08/2021
Entry & Exit Point: Snowbank Lake (EP 27)
Number of Days: 6
Group Size: 3
Trip Introduction:
I plan out a BWCA adventure for myself and my friends every year or two and this year I tried to get us into a PMA without a large paddle plan to get there, so Spider Lake PMA (specifically Sedative Lake) was the target and Snowbank Lake Lodge & Outfitters was our kicking off point. The geographic difference between the lodge and the EP for the lake turned out to be a point of note on the final day :/. I had never made that error before and will not again. Our trips have generally been a crew of 4 guys, sometimes one switches out for another, but this time one of our crew had to drop out at the last minute due to work and the outfitter didn't have a solo canoe for us to switch out for, so we ran with two 2-person canoes, but one would have to be driven solo. That ended up being a pivotal part of everything, but we'll get to that later. I also wanted to get some fishing experience as it's been years since I had really done any and my kids have been wanting to do some, so I'm trying to get some experience so I can help them while also learning a bit more myself. Finally a giant FU to most (a grandfather and his grandkids helped in the end, so thanks to them) the folks at Wilderness Bay Lodge who refused to help or even acknowledge someone in need of help. I hope you also receive a similar "Minnesota nice" treatment when you need help someday :)
Day 1 of 6
Sunday, August 08, 2021

We drove up from the twin cities and had lunch at a nice little cafe in Cotten called Wilberts Cafe and el Toro Lounge. The food was good and gave us a nice break in the drive.

When we arrived at Snowbank Lodge we were greeted well and happy to find the bunk rooms there have electricity and water. We have stayed at others where they had neither, which is a little bit of a bummer when you're wanting a nice night before heading out.

I grilled us up burgers, brats and bacon for dinner, had some adult beverages and we all went through our packs to see that we had the appropriate gear and weren't severely doubled up on anything
