Day 5 of 11
Saturday, August 24, 2024 Moving Day. We got up reasonably early and packed up. The usual routine where I packed up as I got out of the hammock. By the time I walked to the kitchen for morning coffee I had my entire sleep system packed up and in the bag. A quick breakfast of milk and cereal, pack everything up and are paddling way by 9:00 AM. It a foggy morning and dead calm. As we pass the campers next to us we see that they are packing up too. I said , they have a lot of gear, in what I thought was a soft voice. Apparently not soft enough because we get a reply from the shore, "hey it's not that much stuff!". I laugh and say we probably got more per capita and I was just admiring the load.
It was heavy low clouds. A little muggy but it didn't feel like it was going to rain. Plenty warm and the lake was smooth as glass. We worked our way up the lake and looked for the petroglyphs. We weren't very good at finding any but found plenty of people. Most campsites in the center part of the lake looked occupied. A little after noon, we stopped on the shore to eat lunch and stretch our limbs. Just then the clouds started to break apart and the blue skies appeared.
Time to get going. Clearing skies meant the wind was starting to blow. Luckily it was a tail wind! We cruised up the lake to the group of islands at the North end.
As we approached, the sites facing South looked occupied. And the wind was blasting up the lake right into those sites. So we scooted through the channel between the islands and found some calm water. Looking at the small island behind the first one, we saw a campsite available. And what a great site it was. Site 515 with a beautifully built fire ring. Lots of flat area. Smallish island with plenty of open space. Great bear hang trees. and a great landing that was like pulling into a drydock. We arrived about 2 PM and decided this would be a great spot to stop. Awesome site, protected by the South wind by a tall island, good hammock trees, and on the east side so if the wind shifted from the west, we still had a protected site. I went for a swim and out to the rock right off shore. Then came back to set up camp. We didn't go fishing as we were planning another layover day. There's lots of great fishing all around this area and we figured that we would go out and slay them tomorrow. In the meantime we started getting dinner ready. The filet mignons were defrosted so that was dinner along with bag o'salad and some fried potatoes and onions. A couple of glasses of wine from the box and we settled in for a gourmet meal with a million dollar view.
