Trip Introduction:
Flashback to January 2020, my Dad and I planned what we hoped would be an epic 12 night trip into Quetico from Prairie Portage, north to Kawnipi and looping back down through Louisa. We had gone to Kawnipi many years earlier by way of the Falls Chain and wanted a new experience. Well, we all know how that turned out, our plans were squashed, but not forever. Now four years later, my Dad was at the ripe young age of 77 and we recruited two more people to join us, which Im sure made our wives feel a bit more comfortable about the trip (and us as well). So now the group of travelers included my Dad, brother Scott (experienced BWCA voyager), family friend and young man (18 spry years old) Wesley (outdoorsman but rookie to the northwoods), and myself. The trip was set!
Day 1 of 11
Saturday, June 08,2024

After 2 days of traveling and an overnight stay at Fall Lake campground, we awoke nice and early and headed to Latourell's for our scheduled 7 am tow to Prairie Portage. On the road between the campground and the resort, we spotted a very mature bear and within another 2 minutes a wolf. We managed to snap a photo of the bear but naturally the wolf escaped our cameras. Nonetheless, what a great way to start our journey. I had seen a wolf in 2022 while on Northern Light Lake, two trips, 2 wolves. Incredible luck. We paid our dues to the outfitter and were on the water by 6:45, headed towards the Ranger Station.

We were the first ones at the station, paid our camping fees and received the required orientation (with fair warning about the rough water to expect this morning), and shoved off by 8:30. We endured quite a strong NW wind making paddling a tough go but slowly and steadily we arrived at the portage to Sunday Lake. It would be Wesley's first ever portage, but he proves to be quite a beast on the trail, oh to be 18 again, and conquered the portage in less than an hour. We did encounter groups at both ends of the portage, but to be expected there I suppose. Once on Sunday Lake, we welcomed a nice tailwind and we cruised down the lake, stopping for lunch on an island before tackling the 2 portages into Agnes.

Besides the mosquitoes, we dont find the portages too difficult. My brother and I are portaging 2.5 times so as not to zap the strength of our Dad, and we arrive on mighty Agnes in the early afternoon. I decide its time to start trolling and not too much later have our first Laker of the trip. However, we continue to struggle paddling into a strong headwind, so I abandon trolling in lieu of making our way north on Agnes. Agnes is beautiful we all agree but she is doing her best to make life hard on us. We aim for a site we have selected and as luck would have it, the only people we have seen since the first portage are camped there so we press northward. We find a site, certainly not the best, terrible canoe landing but we are all tired and hungry, so it will suffice for one night.

We cast our lines from shore, to no avail, eat dinner, set up camp and all are in our respective sleeping quarters by the time it gets dark.
