Covid wont stop us this time... Quetico 2024
by marc24
Another lay over day was on tap for us on our little island paradise. My brother took out a solo canoe while Dad and I fished in the other one. Wes is really good at sleeping, apparently 18 yr olds are good at that. We struggled to find the fish at first but eventually reeled is some decent walleye sprinkled in among a bunch of bass. We did have a beautiful sunrise, always a great way to start a day in Quetico. The skies were clear this morning but when we returned from fishing Wes informed us more storms were forecasted for later in the day, some of them to be severe again. Oh yay!!
We had planned on an extended day trip but instead decided to stick close to camp because of the forecast so we headed north on McKenzie Bay to fish and just explore. We began catching fish almost immediately but after only a mile noticed storm clouds gathering already today threatening to end our voyage early. The two canoes met back up and we chose to fish near an island that had a campsite on it so we could get out of the weather if necessary. We were doing well catching walleye, including a 26 inch beauty and then a storm cell moved into our area. We went ashore and waited out the storm, which included more hail. Four hailstorms in 2 days, that is more than enough for us! After the storm passed, we decided to try to catch dinner before returning to camp and we accomplished our goal. Four gorgeous walleye were on the stringers, headed back to be fileted.
Living in Maryland, we dont get a chance to filet any walleye so I had watched a good Youtube video on how to do it with little waste and to get nice filets. My research has paid off and the filets are turning out very well this trip. Im happy with my work for sure. We tossed the remains to the awaiting gulls and returned to camp where i fried up the fish while Wes prepared some bannock bread. Everyone agreed that the fish dinners have been a highlight of the trip thus far. After spending hours in the canoes earlier, none of us desired to get back in the canoe and fish in the evening. So, we all made some casts from shore and just enjoyed a relaxing evening and a sunset.
