My 14 YO son & I just completed this exact trip... July 5-13, 2024. We were in our NS Polaris, and another friend came with his solo.

3 paddlers, 2 canoes. 2 plane rides were required, as they can only fly 1 canoe/flight.

It was a fabulous trip. High water similar to last year made for impressive falls, current, & sharp seams of slow/fast water to navigate. We did an out & back Falls Chain trip last year mid June 2023, where we met the author of this trip report at Cache Bay Ranger Station. We learned of their route, and were intrigued, to say the least. It didn't disappoint!

We single portaged all but 20% of the Sturgeon/Russell portage, which is a doozy at the beginning.

Great fishing... not middle of June-good, but still great. My son caught hundreds of SM, lots of pike, decent walleye, & a few large lakers on Walter.

If you are interested in an expedition style trip with the adventure of a fly-in and remoteness, do it!

We saw a few groups on Russell, due to the easier access some have from Pickerel, and we saw more people once we got to the south end of Kawnipi, but other than that, we had the place to ourselves.

Hollar with any questions or input on the route. I'd be happy to share our .gpx file of the route as well.

Cheers,

Jared

Great trip report. It’s wild that what looks like a simple narrows on the Chrismar map could be so dangerous.

Sounds amazing. Let us know how it goes!

What a great trip report Bastard2! We are flying into Clay with a Beaverhouse exit 13 day trip starting July 6. Traveling a lot of your route westward. Thanks for the info!

Thanks! I’m guessing the more frequently used areas of the park have portages that have been maintained or used, so it shouldn’t be ubiquitous. I think the provincial park website has an overlay of the 2021 fires.

Update: Found it! https://www.ontarioparks.com/pdf/maps/quetico/Quetico2021FiresMap.pdf

Great report, nice photos--thanks for sharing your story and thanks for the life preserver reminder. Sorry to hear that the badly burned areas are hard to find portages through--we plan to portage out of the NE corner of Sarah in August, and were wondering about the 2021 fire's impact on portage trails.
