07/19/2012 04:10PM Wait you saw Bison in the BWCA? 'Just kidding - nice report and your hook misadventure sent chills down my back - solo removal is a LOT harder than doing it on your partner! |

07/18/2012 08:35PM 4 years ago I used the "string removal method" to extract a rear rappala hook deeply imbedded into my buddys thumb. It worked flawlessly. It was quick and hurt my patient for only a few seconds. I have to say several swigs of Kentucky bourbon prior to hook removal made the extraction easier on the patient. The key is to make sure the eye of the hook is pushed straight down with a finger and the fishing line used is looped around the bend. I would recommend doubling up on the line and using a real quick jerk to remove the hook. The following spring ... another fishing bud used the "string removal method" on me to remove a #4 hook from a worm spinner harness deeply imbedded into my thumb. I have been fishing in Quetico 33 years and never had to do a hook extractio before. Couldn't believe it happened 2 years in a row. |

07/18/2012 09:24AM Nice report, Joe, but I have a question: Why drive all the way to Minnesota when Quebec and Maine have plenty of fine canoeing and fishing? I hope to move to Maine next year and as much as I love western Ontario, I can't imagine ever returning to it. |

07/17/2012 09:44PM Thanks for sharing, Joe. Actually glad you didn't post a picture of your finger - the sunset was a better choice! :-) |

07/17/2012 07:18PM I have been stuck bad before. Even with a leatherman not an easy task. I have never tried it but the string method looks to be the best. string removal method But you are right on the push it through method. In this video there is an easy sting pull hook and then he does the push through. It had to be numbed up...Look at how hard he has to push...and he says it might sting a bit. HA! push through method Good to see you got back on the horse and went back in for the rest of your time. |

07/17/2012 08:44AM Nice trip report - sorry about the fish hook - hopefully it healed quickly. Beautiful sunset photo - it almost looks like the sky is on fire. |
