Greetings fellow paddlers!

Once again I seek the collective experience and wisdom of you all.

While I have 30+ trips in the BW, my paddle partner and I have never been to Quetico and would like to venture there next summer.

I know we each need our passport.

We would like to be out 7-10 days. Route suggestions? Entry point suggestion? Any other helpful suggestions?

Thank you!

woodsandwater,
7 - 10 days is a good amount of time.
With a remote Border Pass you could make a loop out of Prairie portage up into Sarah, McIntyre, & Brent or Kashapiwi, Keefer & Cairn.

From the west side with a tow across Lac Lacroix you could enter at Bottle or McAree and go into Darkey, Brent and out at Prairie Portage.

Lots of variations possible in these routes. Some wild country, good fishing, possible side trips into remote areas.

Consider any of the northern entry points and loop options available. Fewer people, cheaper costs, and fantastic fishing.

even with cheaper fees going in from the north, wouldnt the additional gas make it a wash? especially if you have to buy a tank in canada. of couse, this is coming from a single payer though. (solo)

but then again, you wouldnt need a canpass.

After many years of entering the Q from PP, I started going in from the northern EPs. This usually involves a nite before put-in staying in Thunder Bay (where there are several great gear stores and paddle shops). As Old Salt has mentioned, there are much fewer people, no RABC's to deal with, wonderful campsites (sandy beaches not Canadian Shield)and really DUMB fish who act like they've never seen a lure before (if I can catch fish...they are really suckers....pun intended). The downside is, the entry lakes are pretty large, and you are subject to strong winds at times. My recent trip in August had 30-40 mph winds and 3 ft waves on Pickerel Lake. Not a good situation w/ loaded boats. We were windbound for 2 days.

Here is how we do it. Your mileage may vary. We top off gas at International Falls. One tank will get you in and out of Canada without the need to purchase gas in Canada. We leave Twin Cities early enough to get to entry station in the afternoon, and start trip. For example, if starting at Nym, we can get to Batch for 1st night.

So we have no overnight outside Q. For post trip shower options, the city campground in AtiKokan or French Lake are two good options.
