What GPS basemap do you use for Garmin handhelds in Quetico? We have a Dakota 20, so a chip or software would both work. Garmin has TOPO Canada and TOPO Canada Central (Sask. Man. Ont.). There are no retail stores that seem to carry any map software or chips anymore. They all send me back to the internet.

We also plan to go to Woodland Caribou this summer, so one chip/software that covers both would be good.

strange as it may seem Topo North America 9.0 from DeLorme might be what you are looking for. Contains topo of all of US & Canada. It is what I used for my trips to Woodland Caribou, Quetico, and Wabakimi.

Hopefully Butthead will see this thread and chime in, I believe he has used Garmin with Topo.

another possibility is TopoFusion, Google it. Some things about it are Better at less price IMO, and there is a freeware version you can check out. Keep in mind all the various products base their maps on the same Canadian maps which you yourself can get for free.

We got PaddleNav for our Garmin Oregon 500t. PaddleNav
Very accurate lakes and portages for both BWCA and Quetico so it is seamless at the boarder areas. Lake depth lines, fish species for the lake- very nice program.

Erin,

Got the PaddleNav this past X-mas. Am looking forward to using it in the Q this Sept. Any drawbacks? Ease of use? Thanks.

Hey Adam-
Honestly the program was really perfect- no issues with it at all. The set up was simple- just follow the directions for identifying the program in MAPS. Portages were all accurate for our trip in Quetico this past week. All the lake depths matched up to our fish finder- really you couldn't ask for a better set up for the Garmin if you want both BWCA and Quetico. I was so relieved and impressed since the Garmin programs were so useless looking and SO much more expensive!

Thanks for the feedback Erin. Only 73 days before I get to test it out myself!
