On the Echo Trail it poured and poured. Haven't gone out to explore cause the last time I went out between showers the mosquitoes were thicker than the downpour. Even encased in Gortex and head spritzed with DEET I could not sustain the dog walk. Dog did not want it to be sustained.

I just received a text from a friend who's staying at the Super 8 in Eveleth. He relayed that the tornado touched down not far from there. He also said that he got soaked at checking in to the hotel. He's heading to Quetico so hopefully it'll clear by tomorrow morning.

Keeping an eye on the radar from over here in China. It looks like the rain has cleared the BWCA area now at 01:30 AM. I hope everyone is alright. I heard about the rescue underway for the youth that was hit by a falling tree. Any other reports of injuries?

Looks like a band of 7 to 7.5" --- no bueno for those under that. Will be interesting not only hearing stories from those that experienced this deluge , but how high the water went up in certain spots -- Curtain Falls has to be epic.

Here’s what we know so far. For reference I own

Yesterday we had lots of rain. We are evaluating the situation and learning more as we get into the day. The Echo Trail is closed from the North Arm road towards the north. The USFS has paused the permits for entry points up the Echo trail as they figure out what the roads look like.
The North Arm Road by Burntside lake has a couple wash outs. Slim Lake is not accessible.
We are waiting to hear about the Spruce Road and 377/Tomahawk Road which covers a few more BWCA entry points.
Caution should be used when driving towards Ely, MN in the next few days. The MNDOT 511 website isn’t fully updated yet. Plan for detours and extra travel time.
Currently, we have power, phones and cell phone service.

I can only imagine what campers are doing this morning. No way to stay dry with 6” of rain.
We are going to hear some gruesome stories soon…
Imagine campsite, portages, rivers…

The Ely Chamber of Commerce just shared the following information on road closures due to flooding:

Highway 1 to Ilgen City: Road closed due to flooding south of the Ely Airport turnoff and just north of Finland.
Highway 1 from Hwy 53 has two points closed between Angora and Peyla.
Highway 169 is closed on both Karja Roads.
Highway 53 is closed at Idington and Sherman Corner
Highway 135 is closed east of Gilbert and also in Biwabik.
Duluth has several closures on Highways 53 and 35.
North Arm Road on the Echo Trail is closed.

Social media photos show a large section of North Arm Road near Burntside Lake near Ely entirely washed out.

The U.S. Forest Service said the storms caused damage throughout the 3-million-acre Superior National Forest. Staff from all five district ranger stations are assessing damage, specifically around BWCAW entry points, campgrounds, roads and trailheads.

"All (Superior National Forest) visitors with reservations over the next few days for BWCAW Point of Entry or campgrounds that are severally affected by storm damage will be contacted directly," the Forest Service said in a news release Wednesday.

The Baptism River near Beaver Bay rose multiple feet in just a few hours and was already above its flood stage of 14 feet as of Tuesday evening, one of several rivers throughout the Northland expected to rise quickly as the storm passed.

Wednesday is the 12th anniversary of the massive 2012 flood that devastated parts of the Duluth area with nearly 10 inches of rain.

From the Superior NF facebook page.

"NOTICE-BWCAW Entry Point Closures
Due to washouts and flooding the following Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Entry Points are not accessible and have temporary closures:
Trout Lake #1 Day Use and Overnight Motor (motorized portage is not passable; paddle permits can still be issued)
Mudro Lake #23
Slim Lake #6
South Hegman Lake #77
Angleworm Lake #20
Angleworm Trail #21
Stuart River #19
From Big Lake #7
Affected permit holders are being notified and will be informed of their options. These closures are subject to change and additional closures could be added due to quickly changing conditions."

I would think there would also be some closures on the Tofte and Gunflint Ranger Districts.

We entered Tuesday morning at Moose Lake. We stayed on shore to wait out a quick storm at around 11AM then headed to Ensign. We found a decent campsite and got settled in just before the evening storm hit. We were on high ground so it wasn't too bad flood wise, but we had a few mini creeks run through camp. We managed to cook nice steaks for dinner and get to bed before the last huge wave ripped through. It was nuts, but I can sleep through anything, and I proved it to myself. We woke up to a windy day. We had a few beginners, so we stayed in camp instead of risking a capsize. The weather broke for the better and we finished up a great trip.

I was on Gabbro when the storm hit. Rained hard an hour in the morning, then around 2:30 it slammed us for 3 hours. We had standing puddles that were 4-5 inches deep in the campsite. Luckily, the tents were on high ground. The lake level proceeded to rise 3 feet over the next few days. We exited Saturday and the lake was still rising. Walleye fishing was great, the bite was on big time after the storm. Lots of people left on Wednesday morning, soaked and ready to go home. Quite the storm!

GopherAdventure - or others:
I am scheduled to enter Tues 6/25 at 75 travel west thru Bald Eagle then exit 33 Little Gabbro Fri 6/28. I have been in a handful of times but this is my first trip fully leading. I am bringing my 18 year old son- first timer. It will be just the 2 of us.
Where did you exit? How did portage look? I know swell of water is coming south from Moose Lake area... the Ely Echo is reporting https://www.facebook.com/theelyecho high water at White Iron Lake.

If I could change my permit and skip some portages - should I? Any advice? I want my 'kid' to have a great first experience (vs the cushy walleye fishing he does out of the glamper-cabin at Lake of the Woods).

Thanks for any suggestions!

With the current high water and flow rates I would be looking at doing a more lake based trip.
The South Kawawishi River is within a foot of the record. I would assume other rivers would be maxed out and would be dangerous.
Check with the Forest Service and Outfitters in the area. We turned around on the number chain with conditions like this.

My paddle partner and I entered at Sawbill around 8am on the 18th and headed up to the Lujenida-Zenith portage. Around 11am, maybe a bit before, we were caught in a shower as we finished the second half of the portage. We decided to set up camp on Zenith and right around 4pm the rain came again. It confined us to our tarps/hammocks and the rain continued until just before 2am on Wednesday. Luckily the Zenith site is well sloped and we were able to keep ourselves and much of our gear dry. We were glad to be hammocking even if it isn't the best site for hangs. Nonetheless, we spent Wednesday drying things out before continuing on to Wine Lake Thursday morning.

Around noon on Thursday we portaged down to Mug to check out the falls. I have never been there before but, compared to photos I have seen, the falls were roaring.

On the way out yesterday morning we saw many trees down just south of Sawbill. The road was clear and Sawbill Outfitters were busy so there wasn't too much damage in that area. As a final note, I have never experienced a ten hour thunderstorm before and being in that remote area in those conditions was humbling. We did see a single canoe on Zenith Wednesday morning and a few foot prints on our way south on Saturday but the prospect of being trapped on the far end of that portage, if wind damage was serious, was daunting.

Edit: photo added
