Entry Point 1 - Trout Lake

Trout Lake entry point allows overnight paddle or motor (25 HP max). This entry point is supported by La Croix Ranger Station near the city of Cook, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 30 miles. Access from LakeVermilion via 60-rod canoe portage or 180-rod portage that allows the use of portage wheels. This area was affected by blowdown in 1999.

Unbelievable the part about the snapping turtle laying eggs in the fire grate. What are the odds?


Side note - why was your dog cranky? I've never brought a dog to the BWCA, but I'd have to think they'd be in heaven the whole trip.

Nice report and pics! I did that loop solo in 2012 and laid over on Finger. Gebe also. It sounds like you didn't get to visit the rock chairs on Gebe. Ive never stayed on Oyster but that is a long day going from there to the entry. Swampy long portages.


That is amazing that you caught the turtle in the act of laying eggs. You made the right call to dig them up IMO. Thanks for the report.

He's been on two trips now and you are right he is in heaven the whole time, he loves it! I just think he was tired from the couple of days before with all the hiking and a long car ride. Once he had a good nap he was back to his normal self!
