I wish, but no lures were found. I bet that was a mistake Mr. Squirrel only made once. I think the only ones our group lost we’re to the rocks in the lake.

Luckily they have yet to acquire a taste for vodka, fireball or scotch. Those bottles were all unscathed.

Did you find the crankbait lure they stole from us? They chewed through a naglene bottle of vegetable oil and tried to drag it off.....Tried to get at the food pack - we watched them attempt to walk the rope from our food back hung in the tree. They even tried to drop down on it from branches above. The only thing that dispersed them was an occasional flyover from turkey vultures - then they were scarce!

Nice report!

We stayed at that site a couple weeks ago and you were dead right about those squirrels. They chewed all the way through my gamma seal lid one night, I definitely did not think that was possible. Impressive perseverance, luckily they only got into one bag of nuts.

We had the same game plan as you, left Rockwood first thing in the morning and found it open. Every day at least one group came by to ask for a report on site availability. Just lucky I guess.

The traffic was incredible. We lucked out - we left Rockwood before 6 am, so we had plenty of back up plans in case sites were occupied. We talked to a few groups who were successful with Walleye - but they were using live leeches. We will add that to our list next year (just hate trying to keep those little buggers alive for a week).

Thanks for the report. We were going to camp on Meeds our last Sunday night (7/19) but the wind changed our travel plans from Gaskin. Hope to make it there someday but I always worry about the campsites being taken.

Nice report.

We bring our food in kitty litter buckets. They are squirrel proof. They can also segregate the different foot and provide extra seats.

I had squirrels chew thru some heavy duty plastic at my house over the course of a winter, but never that destructive at a campsite! But with the incredible number of red squirrels I experienced on my recent trip, I slept well at night knowing I had my food stashed in Ursacks.

I agree that the portage into Meeds is on the long side but it really has decent footing so it goes by pretty quickly.

Thanks for a fun read.

We camped on the first island site from the Poplar lake portage. I'm not sure if they swim, but they are pretty much land locked during summer. We saw some vultures and eagles - but they'd have to be pretty silly to get nabbed. We were visiting their home - so we took it in stride. Chewing thru nalgene bottles was a first for us.

Tim, I live in Maine and yesterday, trapped my 28th red squirrel in ten days. I release them at a nature preserve. They're cute, but fearless and consider my house to be their house, running on windowsills and the roof and visiting my porch everyday.

BigTim: "Kind of like kissing a donkey."

Huh... I always imagined fish to have more scales than a donkey. Who knew!

Enjoyed the short but sweet read. What's that like, kissing a fish?

The squirrels are the reason I purchased a couple of Ursack AllMitey's. I had a bunch of FD meals and bread mixes shipped to my buddy a few years back so we could split the weight on the plane. He was flying to MN from CO, and I was coming in from TX. I received an alert one afternoon that UPS had delivered the package to his house. When he arrived home from work 2-3 hours later the boxes were torn open and there was flour and FD food all over his porch, sidewalk, and front yard. I thought if it could happen at home, it certainly could happen in the BWCA.

Lost a rapala? Why the nerve of those squirrels. What are they going to do with it anyway? Bury it?

NoService: "Nice trip report BigTim - some of the details are confusing (who yells 'dog' while searching for a dog? I supposed it could be named 'Dog'; isn't that sort of uncommon?), but in general I feel like I was right there with ya!"

I knew someone who actually named their dog DeeOhGee. :-)

Clever and yet ??
