02/26/2015 08:42PM Thank you for all the advice! I am hooked on winter camping. My sister flew up from Chicago to join me... and even though she and I share a love for the BWCA, she wasn't sure about winter. But she loved it! Followed advice of SevenofNine, we stayed at a State Park (Bear Head in Ely which was silent and beautiful). We did get out skiing on various bwca entrance points, and explored where we might want to stay on the next trip. Piragis provided the tent and stove, and additional advice which was helpful. We rented canvas tent, but next time I want to rent CCS if we have to haul (canvas was heavy). Amazing how much stuff is needed in winter. My sister took some great pictures which we will post (when I figure out how to do so). |

02/04/2015 05:18PM I have never carried picks. I try to avoid the bad ice, but I am always skiing and the poles are usable for picks if it would come to it. |

I HATE being on unknown ice. I keep them in my pocket and not as accessible as they should be. But I have them. These but from Fleet Farm They go together to protect the point...end to end. |

01/29/2015 08:06PM Since you haven't camped in the winter before I highly recommend you try a short trip at a state park to checkout your gear setup. You will learn a lot when you find out stuff like everything freezes, it's harder to open things, metal spoons and cups freeze to your lips. So many fun things to learn! |

01/29/2015 02:00PM I'd say a good start is to just use a regular backpacking/camping list and add the stuff that is more winter related like Warmer clothes, sled, skis/boots/poles or snowshoes and poles, etc. |

01/29/2015 12:41PM Dan, I like that list. It hits the major categories and you leave much room for personal choice/interpretation. The only thing I would add would be lighting options (headlamps, candles, lanterns, etc.) And fishing stuff if that's a priority. |

I doubt I would agree with any checklist including one I would make up if I took the time. so here is my rambling. I break it down to activities and go over it in my mind. After Matches and map and compass Eating- Food/ Cooking- Eating utensiles Sleeping- Bag / Pad /clothes I like to wear sleeping. over bag/ ground cloth, Tent, Tarp Clothes- Active clothes for moving about/ clothes for being at rest-clothes for when it has gone badly . the best question here is What is the worst weather I am going to encounter, and am I willing to be out in moving about all day long? First aid- bandaids and asprin- hand sanitizer Wood fire - Stove- Matches/ Lighter. If wood fire is planned on then wood processing equipment Misc tools/ repair. The items they list are mostly procured from Canadian sites but you can use the items as a reference. I don't totally agree with everything they suggest but it is a good comprehensive list. 01/27/2015 06:21PM Each summer/fall I typically get to BWCA 3+ times - yet I always check my gear/food/clothing list before leaving home to ensure I don't forget anything. Does anyone have a similar list for winter camping they could share. Haven't been winter camping yet, so this would be valuable. Thanks! |
