Your present snow depth?
They are talking the next 10 days starting Saturday from 12 inches-close to 20 inches of new snow? Who knows?
Brainerd_Mille Lacs has 23 inches of snow in the woods now and deer movement really slowing down. Most lakes have some slush and people having trouble getting fish houses of.

Round lake-next to Gull lake north of Brainerd. A total of 4 wheeled Fish houses paid a total $3500 to get a caterpillar and front end loaded to plow a road to get their fish houses off. Brainerd area fish houses had to be off Monday March 4th.

Also many people shoveling snow off roofs around home. I did.

At this point I’m not sure I care anymore. Death by a billion snowflakes, sure, bring it on. I think mpr yesterday said the pack is 18-20 in the twin cities. Meh. What’s another 8 at this point? The river here in the city is going to be high and fast and likely dirty. that’s my biggest concern.

They said like some areas down by the Cities for thru February this year the snow is equal to like 1965 when they had terrible floods.

Half way between Duluth and two harbors, 32" in my yard. That's after it's settled a while.
And I remember 'them' saying it was going to be a warm, dry winter.

Lake superior is more than 90 ice covered.

The hydro concerns with these two systems is very concerning. Rain may make it's way into S.MN on both storms. Here in Central to Southern IA we are expecting 3-6" of snow on Thursday-- then rain (potentially heavy) over the wkend. Tremendous amount of water in the existing snow pack across the Upper Midwest -- anywhere from 1.5" to 5". Frost depth is anywhere from 30" to 60"+ - so ANY moderate rainfall is going to cause issues. One good thing is that it doesn't look to warm up too fast outside these systems so overall snow melt (when it does melt) shouldn't be sudden. But certainly something to keep aware of of the next 10 days is hydro concerns where it does rain.

Snow depth here in C.IA is anywhere from 5" to 10".

My dad bought the house I grew up in- on a lake in 1965.For the Twin Cities proper- 1965 is the benchmark for river flooding. Hopefully this snow pack can slowly melt.

Whitewolf like you said and others the frost depth probably going to insure major flooding in southern and central Minnesota and I think The Red river area of Moorehead and Grand Forks.

Yes, also the deer are in good shape now in much of Minnesota but anymore snow we will be losing deer this winter.

There have been a lot of flood improvements since ‘65. The mighty Mississippi will run high. I’ve got over 3’ in my yard near Rochester.

I think of '65 every time I run past the historic flood marker on Pike Island. I just cannot even fathom water that high.

Bare ground here in the armpit of America, NW Indiana. Haven't had snow OTG for about 6 weeks. Having said that I'm guessing the frost is rather deep here as no blanket of snow to insulate the ground. Brown and cold...

At home in southern Michigan we have about an inch of snow.
At our cabin in northern lower peninsula we have 2 to 3 feet.

WTH, we're just getting into the prime time for skiing and you folks are talking about melting and flooding? ;-)

There's officially a couple feet at DLH. Go into the woods around here and it will seem a whole lot deeper, which it is. I've been on my 56" Alaskan snowshoes and needing them. Too much unconsolidated snow for my backcountry skis until I pack down a trail with the 'shoes.

HANG IN THERE, KING BOREAS!!!

You might not remember this, but I do. That year we got pounded by snow in March. The flooding came in April. The tornadoes came in May. And the Twin Cities were actually on different times for a while that spring because of the furor over DST (no, I'm NOT making this up.)

The situation was summarized as: We had flooded basements, our roofs were gone and we didn't know what the hell time it was.

We got 11.5 inches in Downeast Maine a couple days ago, but it was so water-laden (You could squeeze water out of a snowball.) that it's no longer 11.5 inches. Beneath the compacted snow are inches of compacted ice from the heavy rainfalls that froze. I'm sure there still be white stuff come April. Sigh.

How far you sinking in the snow and how deep the snow.
I have been using my E105 backcountry skiis and been sinking like 45% down in 23 inch snow. It is soo fluffy. his wind now the last few days is making it harder in the open areas some.
Yes hard to beat the old web snowshoes.

On my Madshus Annums (way wider than your E105), 195 cm, I’m knee-deep and it’s pretty cumbersome. I have a 212 cm pair of Karhu Equipes that might have done better. I’m going to try those. The whole experience has motivated me to make a pair of what the Norwegians call jaktski (“hunting skis”) in a suitable length this summer.

I think no matter what you use you will sink x inches to get that base under your foot. I don't know if I seen it stay so fluffy so long. My E109 are 200 cm.

Did it once before, going to take out my atlas 10 x 30 inch snowshoe,my Michigan snowshoe 14 x 48 and my E109 and see the difference?

FWIW, I’m 225 # and the Annum profile is 109-78-95 mm, whereas your E109s are apparently 82-60-70. The snow has to be damn deep for me to be on snowshoes instead of skiing ...

lots of snow in the new ulm area and more to come. it's more fun driving round town looking at the icicles hanging off roofs than it was looking at christmas lites.
there's gonna be some people with serious roof problems pretty soon.

I was talking to Jeremy at Canoe Canada the other day and he told me there was 6' of snow on ground in Atikokan. Forecast is for up to another foot in next week. I'm heading in May 17 and hoping the snow is (mostly) gone and the ice completely!

I would wonder about May 17th the north end of Quetico. Wow for snow.

03/06/2019 02:46PM
The maps I can find say we have 60" on the ground. My yard is anywhere from 1' to 8'. I might have to break out the alaskans to take out the compost.

We had terrible flooding Father's day weekend last year. Much of that damage was still present before the snow began to fly. I pray we have a slow steady melt.

I don't think you have to worry about low water levels in the BW this year through June. Probably gonna see a few fire pits in the drink. Running the "V" up to Curtain Falls from Iron will need an extra touch/power come opener....

Whitewolf knows much more than I do but see around noon for Brainerd-still talking 5-8 inches Brainerd-more south. More than middle next week.

Haha! I am enthralled with the icecles too! Can anyone tell me why some the of the ice on some houses is really brown?

I believe that this spring is going to be very interesting.

My guess is that the brown icecles are caused by somebody not cleaning their gutters and it's rotten leaf juice.

I was hiking on and off a trail through our local state park last saturday and if you ventured off the path you sank down at least 24 inches.

03/07/2019 12:32PM
We live on a hill. The snow has drifted in our field and we have about 4 feet out there. Just dug out the chicken coup and roof raked the sheds. Yesterday hubby removed the snow on our house. The vents were covered and we have a 4/12 roof. Wanted to get it off.

We here about the ‘65 flooding which I won’t forget. But you don’t hear a lot about the record snow in... was it ‘96. I lived in Cloquet... I remember it being like 156 inches.

I remember that year very well. That was one of the hardest winters ever on deer in my lifetime. Like Longville area, north of Brainerd. 90% of the deer fawns died and like40-50% of the does.
That was also a very cold winter. Remember winter camping in the BWCA and you looked at the big White Pine-like much of the State the needles were brown from cold and dehydration. I was worried they were going to die. They came out of it.
Snow was so deep winter camping I actually put my skiis at camp to to go to the bathroom.
We had a Canada Jay fly out to us while fishing,we gave him a couple crumbs of granola bar. A few minutes later he died. All skin and bone. That year the Canada Jays it seemed like they almost disappeared from Quetico-BWCA. Took many years for I really seen any.
The 1996-97 winter wasn't much better than 1995-96.

In the Twin Cities area the bulk of the snow will fall from afternoon Saturday through Sunday Morning. 2" hourly rates are not out of the question- (probably around dinner time SAT) .Winds will not be as bad the late FEB Blizzard and the snow is rather wet and heavy so blowing of the snow should be minimal.

What is concerning is middle of next week. Potentially heavy rain with temps in the 40's as far North as Duluth. 60F here in DSM WED evening is not out of the question. The water has no place to drain- at least as fast as many will want it too.

I live in the north central IOWA, just south of Austin Minn, and to quote my Mom, The snow is ass deep to a ten foot Indian. FRED

03/08/2019 09:50AM
Well now for much of the State they are talking like maybe a foot of snow Saturday than maybe a inch of rain-ice Wednesday. What a mess. Whitewolf talks about very warm Temps in Iowa next week. Northern part of the state less but they have their share already.

Yes daylight savings time starts this weekend. Too early.

03/09/2019 07:23AM
I like how the storm goes to the Canadian border and straight down and then east keeping Itasca county in the watch vs warning. Haha. Hello my friends in Jacobson... come north 6 miles and it will be so much better. Haha.
Then I see Wednesday forecasted to be 43 degrees... for us that could be quite messy but a relief at the same time. Soon all the southerners will be coming here to get away from the heat...

03/09/2019 09:14AM
Yes with maybe a inch of rain Wednesday. Than topped with a couple inches of snow.

Now I see they are even naming winter storms. This one is called Taylor. Oh well?

While it was only about 6-7 inches near Princeton today, it was very wet and heavy. On the bright side its not picking up and blowing much in this wind. On the darker side, the heavy snow forced me to repair the plow 4 times today!

Sat-Sun's 12 inches or so put the undisturbed back yard depth here in Perham at 4' 2". Along the driveway: 6' 8". Most of the front yard has had snow blown onto it and is a fairly consistent 6'.

Could use some settling, although the grandkids want to come up some weekend and make tunnels...
