Ashbrux,

I have a 16.5' Ally DR, serial number BGN 400 20K 213.

This canoe was manufactured in February 2013, but I purchased it brand new and unused for a two week trip to Alaska that we did during the summer of 2018.

We canoed Alaska's Innoko River. A interesting feature of this river is that it's all soft bottom; we did not see a single rock during our two week trip. A consequence of this is that the canoe's skin remains perfect. I included a picture showing the bottom of the canoe where you can see not even a scratch.

The "DR" model is called the "down river". You can see some videos of guys running some pretty serious whitewater in one of these canoes. Nevertheless, the canoes were plenty stable for us as we fished hard from them for two weeks in the slow moving Innoko, primarily in backwater sloughs with no current.

After shopping for a used Ally for about six months, I was very pleased to find this canoe and paid $1500 for it. I added the large black duffel bag in the above pictures and spent some time color-coding the aluminum poles to make assembly easier.

There is a foam rubber floor that sits between the aluminum frame and the skin. I did tear this floor in a couple of places while learning how to assemble the canoe. I will warn you that assembly is a major p.i.t.a. and takes a good 30 minutes the 1st time you try it. I put duct tape over the torn foam rubber which worked just fine.

These two videos provide additional pictures and information about the canoe.

I am located in Canton, Ohio. I am planning a trip to Ely, MN in early July and a 2nd trip to Nakina, Ontario in early August if you happen to live anywhere along one of these routes I may be able to deliver the canoe.

If you look at the link from Lindentree, the DR16.5 is the 1st canoe you will see; it is retailing for $3,510 Canadian (about $2,500 USD) plus tax & shipping.

If you are interested, I would sell this canoe for $1400 + shipping charges.

I see you are from Canada. I bought mine from this place in Canada, they had a display model they sold me.

I realize this is an old thread, I remembered seeing the post. If there’s still any interest there is an Ally canoe listed on Craigslist in Cape Coral, FL for $800. The description is “like new.” This is not my boat and I have no relation to the seller so I can not vouch for the authenticity of the listing. It’s a long way from the Boundary Waters but “where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

I ended up buying the Ally in Cape Coral--my parents in Naples picked it up for me--and will bring it north in a month or two. I'm probably going to sell my PakCanoe and use the Ally. It's not quite as well made as a PakCanoe, but it's lighter, and a guide I know in northern Alaska swears by them.

I’m glad that worked out for you and glad your parents will be able to help out with getting it to you! If I remember correctly I think the seller had even dropped the price some from the original post.

Yes, it was a good deal and included two Ally paddles, made in Norway. It was pure luck that the boat turned up so close to my parents. Thanks for letting us know about it.

I ended up selling the Ally canoe last year.

The Ally canoes are tough to find used. I bought 2 used ones for a trip that I did to Alaska in 2018; it took me a good 6 months of watching Ebay, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, and BWCA.com to finally find and purchase two of them.

A good alternative is the PAKCANOE which can be purchased new in the USA.

Good luck with your search,

Dave

Yes, still have them. One is a 16.5 foot and the other is an 18 foot. I am in southern Oregon. Where are you located? Have taken them to Alaska probably 4 or 5 times and they worked well. One has a patch for a tear but they are in pretty good shape...I would not hesitate to take them on another trip but unfortunately have reached the point where do-it-yourself trips are in my past!

If you are interested in knowing more, give me a call: 541-531-1679 cell; 541-482-5061 land line.

Ken
PS I also have a 17 foot PakCanoe probably used on 3 trips.

Give me a call.
