I'm looking for some advice for a 5 day (but the fifth day has to be easy b/c we are traveling home). I'm a fairly experienced paddler but bringing someone who is new to the BWCA. We are both in decent shape. Curious if you have any good 4+ day routes out of South Hegman (we prefer loops not an out and back)?

Thanks.

There are not many loop options from that entry point and you’ll have to to the long portage from Hegman to Angleworm twice. But you could make it to Crooked via the Beartrap River and then come back down through Gun and back to Angleworm and down to Hegman.

Angleworm is worth the struggle. My favorite bwca lake. Beautiful pines and rocky bluffs. It is difficult to get to, the portage from tease is difficult, not impossible. Many times I’ve had this gem of a lake to myself, hopefully you will be so lucky. The lakes north of here are also gems. Not sure of your speed or date of travel, but you can make it to curtain falls in this time frame. That would be a fairly pushy trip, no screwing around, Single portage, no getting lost on crooked lake. Best area of the bwca.

If you haven't seen it yet? This trip report should give you some ideas.

Have you left yet? We did a 4 day from S.Hegman a couple weeks back. We exited Mudro going through Boot, Gun and Tin Can Mike to name a few.. But we easily could have added another day or two adding paddling into Beartrap and Moosecamp. Then you can exit out of Nels Lake, which make it a loop as Nels is about 1/2 mile walk to your car at S. Hegman
