We were on the Gunflint from September 6-12 and we could notice changes in just that time, but I wouldn't call it really colorful.
However, on Sunday the 6th we traveled out in the woods to Wild Country Maple Syrup to get our yearly supply for ourselves and gifting. There was quite a bit of nice color in those beautiful maple woods. This was west of Lutsen.
You should have color to enjoy by the 20th.

okinaw55: "I live in Southern Minnesota and we are starting to see the beginning of fall colors here. Still 99% green but some leaves on the ground. Does anyone have an update on colors up north? We put in on the 20th."

We didn’t take a canoe trip, just a cabin week. Not much of interest about canoe-tripping.

The colors on the maples are vibrant yellows, reds and bright orange.
The other trees are starting to change, just not as much yet.
The brushy bushes (many of them) are turning red, deep red/purplish and yellow). Some of the different colored wildflower Asters are more visible now too.

Colors around Ely quite vibrant, especially in the morning or late in the day when the "west coast smoke filter" dials up the vivid setting. Maples and underbrush off to a fast start. Birch and aspen waiting in the wings.
Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s going to die.
