Sorry your trip was ruined. Curious what kind of bear proof containers you were using. We're those containers secured to a tree?

I use Ursack and they are secured to a tree with kevlar rope. I had a bear come into our camp a few months ago also huffing under my hammock fly. It tried unsuccessfully to get at my Ursacks before I woke up and scared it off.

Bears really seem to be a nuisance this season. I'm guessing lack of natural forage due to drought early in the season has caused the bears to be a bit more bold.

Sorry your trip ended early. I would have done the same thing and left.

I now have the Bear vault and worry a bear would carry it off or roll it where I can’t find it even though I secure it to a tree.

I hope this doesn’t ruin it for your daughter. This was a very unusual year and that area has been terrible with bears this year. I went to the same area and to be honest I was prepared to leave early if I had your experience—-I got lucky and didn’t have bear troubles.

Unfortunately the FS doesn’t recognize the ursack as an approved bear resistant container. This area of the BWCAW has a special emergency regulation that only FS approved containers are allowed otherwise you are subject to a fine up to $5,000.

I also entered Seagull on the 21st of Sept. I stopped at that site on Wednesday afternoon on the 23rd of Sept. that week.
There was a tent laid flat with a tarp covering it, another tarp a few feet away, and a camp stool laying near the fire pit. The sight looked ominous to me and I slowly walked away, and paddled over to a neighboring site to talk to a couple of guys. They had also stopped at that site and left because it freaked them out a bit. They were going to go back, and pack up the gear, and take it back to Seagull Outfitters when their trip was over. They planned on staying at the site, so I wonder if they met the same fate as you.
