I am starting to pack for our trip for next weekend. For previous trips, this task would have completed, undone, and redid several times over winter. I am not sure why this trip I have changed my behavior. Perhaps the shaming from my wife about having gear cluttering up the place all winter has finally made an impact.
I did not make a trip last year for the first time for quite a while and I am glad that I am getting back to the place I love. While going through the gear, I discovered some left over food from my last trip (August 2020) as we exited a couple days early after being wind bound at camp. There are some Mountain House meals that are good until 2049. Also a couple Cache lake items (B & G and fry bread) with 2021 expiration dates. Finally an unopened bag of dehydrated jerky sausages with an expiration date of Dec 2020.
I got a kick out seeing these and thought I would shar e with my BDub family.
Happy paddling and stay safe, Coach.

boonie: "Expiration date or best by date? I've eaten some past the date, which often just means they will have lost flavor rather than they'll make you sick. Results on those have been mixed. "
I've done the same particularly with a few Cache Lake fry breads which turned out okay even though beyond the package date. A friend found some Jack's Beef Jerky in his truck that had been there for some time. Tasted the same as always just a bit more chewy. MH meals only go bad if the package has been even slightly punctured. Found that out on a backpacking trip.

Two nights ago I opened up a package of some fancy Italian cheese. It spent 21 days in my bear barrel on a trip to Wabakimi last September and has been in my fridge since. I think it’s a little harder and tangyer than it should be but it’s pretty good. Just had some more.

I bought some Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies from my neighbor and hid them in a duffel bag in my gear room so I wouldn’t eat them all at once. I just found them. The girl I bought them from is now a young women in college. Expired 2014. They tasted the same as fresh ones.

4keys: "I never thought Kraft Mac n cheese could go bad. It definitely can. I think it was a little more than 1 year past expiration. " Our cabin has a box of Kraft Mac and Cheese from 1979. Nobody is going to eat it. We just keep it there as a joke.

This is a bit off topic but a pretty funny story. One year in college I roomed in a big house with 4 other guys. One of them brought a turkey back from Thanksgiving break and was determined to make gravy. He didn’t know what he was doing so he kept adding flour to it to thicken it. Then he left the pot in the sink for 2 weeks or so before he set about to wash it. The result was the gravy had hardened into the consistency of hard plastic that had to be chipped out of the pot. One of the guys took a good sized chunk and hung it on a nail in the kitchen as a momento where it remained for the rest of the school year. Another guy invited one of his buddies to party with him after he finished his final exams, six months or so later. They went out and got drunk, came back to the house and after his buddy heard the story he took it off the wall, took a big bite out of it then hung it back on the nail. No expiration date apparently. Just thought I’d share.
