I left home in a rush in order to tack on some time with some friends in the Adirondacks, and that was a mistake; I forgot a spray skirt, packed the wrong spool for my 7wt reel, and worst -- forgot the Quetico maps in their waterproof deck case.
It's not a red-light emergency, as I have been on this same planned route before. But what if I decide I'd rather just circumnavigate Quetico instead of carry over to Jean and Burntside? Knowing camp locations could be good. Wish I'd not spaced out on such a key thing.
Does anyone know if decent maps like the Fisher maps are available to buy in Thunder Bay, or even at the Dawson ranger station where I hope to pick up my permit? Will go into Atikokan if necessary. Maps matter.
Extra question someone *might* be able to answer: does the Beaverhouse portage have a little yellow wheelbarrow thing at it, and do conditions allow it to actually be used? I sure liked having that to move down my kayak back and gear; so much so that I might pick up a Rubbermaid equivalent at Walmart and bring it out there. I imagine the authorities would want me to take it back out, which would be no problem.

There were multiple wheelbarrows at the Beaverhouse parking lot portage when I was there last week. The portage was wet, but I think you could push a wheelbarrow through the water. Conditions may have changed since last week.
You could contact one of the many outfitters in the area to purchase Fisher or MacKenzie maps.

That's happy news about the wheelbarrows. At 55, I find that managing back strain is a zero-sum game, and keeping the trip's first portage mellow is a great thing.
I'm a little ahead of schedule and just managed online to add one more legal day at the beginning of the trip. Very psyched! If Atikokan wind forecasts apply, there are going to be some breezy days, but that's life in the woods.

Call Canoe Canada Outfitters in Atikokan. You could also call McKenzie Maps and ask them for a stocking dealer along your route. I wouldn’t mess with email. You need an answer ASAP. Call them.
As for the wheelbarrows, don’t plan on using them. Pack efficiently and treat it like a 100 rod portage (which it is).
