Is there a good route from Mudro to Fall Lake that could be done as a day trip?

Thinking ahead for June when my cousin and I will be camped at Fall Lake for several days. He has very little tripping experience and I'd like to get him a good exposure to the BWCA. Is this a good plan?

I took a quick glance at a trip planning website and the distance is about 12 miles canoeing plus 3.5 miles portaging (assuming double portaging) with an "average" paddler total ONE way travel time of nearly 7 hours.

I think going up to Pipestone Bay is a more realistic decision.

So with single portaging, that's about 13 miles. At 2mph, that's about 6-1/2 hours... very doable in mid-June with long daylight hours. This works well for our wives to drop us off in the morning and start Happy Hour just before we return.

Now to get my cousin on board.

I guess I misunderstood your original post. I had the impression you were base camping and wanted to do a roundtrip between Fall and Mudro in one day, which would be a total travel time of 12-14 hours. If you are doing a roundtrip, more power to you.

No round trip. Just a one-way trip from Mudro back to Fall Lake Campground and our RVs. We spend a week motor-boat fishing area lakes and need to take a break from that to do some tripping. Our wives will be dropping us off at the parking lot while we make a BWCA day-trip.

Starting at Mudro head to Sandpit and then to the Range River. Range River will take you to Jackfish Bay. You’ll probably have enough time to paddle around to Pipestone rather than taking the portage. Paddle back through Newton and you’re back to Fall. Be sure to check the weather as wind could be a factor in your trip.

Yes... that looks like a good route. Skipping a portage and paddling around is a nice option. We'll have time to pick our day, keeping an eye on the weather. If my cousin balks, I may consider a solo outing.
