I often check member profiles to determine a member's age related to comments they make.

"We are all about paddling"... I assume they are young.

"That can be an ambitious portaging speed"... I assume they are old.

Why are so many members 123 years old... I assume they don't want their age know. Why?

Well you know what they say about assumptions…

But to at least answer some of the question- the birthdate portion is in the optional “extended profile” and it defaults to 1900 in the system, so if someone doesn’t change it, that’s what it will show.

For many people it is a privacy issue. They feel that any personal information posted online is more likely to result in them being hacked or their ID being stolen. I had a friend who was livid because I mentioned her birthday one time in an email--she was sure she would then be hacked and have her identity stolen.

Obviously, I am not one of the people on this site who are 123 years old, so while I worry about other things, including my birthdate in my profile isn't one of them.

I'm not worried about privacy, but I'm just not big on birthdays, so I didn't bother putting it down.

To really interpret comments about paddling and especially portaging, I also want to know how tall they are, their personal best (in the previous year) for 10 reps of an overhead press, and their personal best (also in the previous year) for a 1-mile run. So until we have all of that in the profile, I was born in 1900.

OK, maybe I'll put in my birthdate but lie a bit so it isn't an identity theft risk.

BTW, I'm older, shorter, weaker, and slower than I used to be.

Haha, I’m picturing a younger taller Andym... I understand where the OP is coming from. I always wish people all shared where they are from. But again can understand many do not feel comfortable sharing. Hmmm, where is Andym from???? Haha! Wish I was still out that direction right now.

I list my birthday, as the day the White Sox beat the Cubs, in the World Series.
I wish I could list the total canoe trips I've been on, rather than just 40+, or whatever the option is.
Listing the number of lakes visited would be cool too.
BTW.... I'll be 63 at some point this year.

I simply put my birthdate close to when I was actually born.
As far as identity theft is concerned, I feel in this electronic world, that information is out there for anyone who wants it already.

It was a severe blow when the medical assistants downgraded me from 5’8” to 5’7”.

As for wanting to be here, it’s warmer than there but real wet and trees are falling down and blocking roads most days this week. Plus that mountain lion is probably still about the neighborhood.
