Moose although generally docile and photographed as such. Much like bison, don't approach them.

Many years ago, I was planning my first trip to Alaska. While attending the Minneapolis Sports Show I stopped at an Alaska booth and asked about tenting in grizzly bear country. The guy smiled and said not to worry about bears but watch out for the moose! He said they can be the most cantankerous critters on the planet.

Some years ago I was awoken by loud crashing in the woods. The noise kept getting closer and closer. I finally realized that it must be a moose. I yelled at it stopped dead and ran off back into the woods. When I woke up the next morning I saw the hoof prints about 10 yards from my tent. Had I not woken up and yelled, my guess is that the moose would have walked through my tarp and over my tent.

One year on Malberg we came back to our campsite and our tent had been pulled out and moved about 10 feet. We looked it over and found a large bite mark on the roof of the tent. We saw fresh moose tracks leading up to the tent and a few minutes later the cow moose revealed herself by returning to our camp. All we could figure was that she must have had a young calf nearby.

Had a friend who was a USGS archeologist in the BWCA. Spend 21 of every 24 days in the BWCA all season. After many wildlife encounters, he said he'd much prefer to meet a bear over a moose in the BWCA.

I unknowingly followed one (or two) for about 2 miles once snowshoeing in the Mountains. The whole time I was annoyed thinking it was someone in boots post-holing the trail all the way but also thinking it was strange since I was the only car at the trailhead and I was first one up after that snow. Only after hearing something quite large breaking branches up the trail but out of sight, I realized it had to be moose. Park ranger later told me they like to use the hiking trails in the winter to get around because it's a bit easier to navigate. Makes sense.

Never got close enough to see them but I figure they were probably only a couple hundred yards ahead of me the whole time. kinda freaky!

Two summers ago I found myself face to face with a young bull with both of us in the water, maybe 15 yards away. I was pulling the boat through a shallow narrows when he crashed across. My kid was in the boat so instinct was to keep myself between the moose and the boy. I was too in awe to really register the danger of the situation, but thankfully it all worked out well. We all want close encounters with wildlife but this was a little too close in hindsight. Before that I’d only ever seen moose along the Gunflint Trail in my vehicle.

Long, long ago in my youth, I was portaging a canoe along the Clearwater Road. The rest of my group was out of sight behind me. As I rounded a bend, a young bull moose stepped out of the woods in front of me. Way too close for my comfort. I stopped, it stopped and stared. I finally thought of the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy" and I turned my canoe sideways in hopes the moose decided my rack was bigger than his rack and didn't want to risk a fight. It worked!

I was skiing in Jackson Hole a few years back. One day I stepped out the door, and turned the corner and almost ran into a bull moose. If you think they look big 50 at foot away, try looking one in the nose at 3 foot away. I immediately did two things, 1st I turned around and went back in the condo and shut the door, 2nd I changed my underwear.

I worry about 3 animals in the BWCA., in this order.
1. A cow moose with a calf.
2. A bull moose full of testosterone.
3. A bear getting into my food.
