QueticoMike: "missmolly: "Nice to see that bigmouth bass! "
That's the biggest LMB I have ever caught in Quetico! It slammed a wake bait off the surface!"
She's a beauty, Mike. As you know, I loved smallmouth for decades, but I do love the raw power of a largemouth.
I catch them side-by-side in Maine and I can tell you what's on the line purely by the way they fight. Largemouth dig. Smallmouth sprint and leap.
Congrats, bloody stump. Gorgeous bass!
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Canoe country largemouth are just fascinating to me. They are way tougher than the cupcakes we have down here in the lower peninsula of Michigan. In canoe country they are at the very northern edge of their range in habitat that doesn't always suit them perfectly. They are always solid, chunky fish that are super-aggressive and fight like demons. The ultimate survivors!

Caught this one in a small lake about 40 minutes North of St Paul a few weeks ago, targeting walleye near a weed edge on a fathead under a slip float. Went 19 inches, no scale. I gave it a hook set that ticked it off and it immediately sprinted to the surface and leapt! I’m not much of a bass fisherman— strange behavior for a largemouth?

Seems like strange behavior for a Largemouth but, like you, I’m an amateur at best. I caught a few big LMB (and more than a few big Smallies) very recently in northern Wisconsin out of a kayak. In those experiences, both species fought very similarly to what missmolly described.

I live in Oklahoma, and fish for LMB every week. The smaller (less than 4lbs) will jump quite frequently, though not as often as the SMB. Larger fish in this neck of the woods stay down, and head directly for cover. There are of course, exceptions to the rule. My brother lost a 6+ pound fish when it jumped just before he landed it in his tube....I wish I had a camera ready, the look on his face was priceless. All in all, I prefer catching smallies. Perhaps because I rarely see them here.

Heck, yeah, they do. Here are two largemouth that I caught on Sunday. I was fishing a swamp. There was four feet of straight water with two feet of weeds under it. The first fish reached the weeds and burrowed. I pulled her out, which I typically don't succeed at doing, as they usually escape when they reach weeds, and she reached the boat looking like a pig in a blanket, with her big lips sticking out. I peeled weeds off her for thirty seconds.
The second bass tried the same trick, but I mustered every bit of strength I had to turn her and succeeded. However, she jumped right beside my canoe, coming completely out of the water and shaking like she was posing for a 1953 Field and Stream cover. I was lucky to land her too.

Nice fish!!! I recently fished a pond here in Oklahoma that has a similar setup and with similar results. Bigger fish get in the weeds and have even broken me off (I only use 8lb mono) and are very hard to pry out of their weedy jacket. I love that pond though. Very clear by Oklahoma standards, and the fish have great color.

thegildedgopher: "Beauties, all.
Molly the mouths and bellies on those LMB
are impressive. Well done!"
Thanks, GG! I weighed the one on the left: 6.54 lbs. That's a pretty big girl for 45 degrees north. Here's another 6-pounder I caught last week.

mgraber: "Beautiful fish, Mike, really nice largemouth! 10 more days and I'm headed in! I had to miss the spring bite this year, but have 26 days to spend in Q this summer."
26 days??? WHOA!!! Take fishing gloves or tell your thumbs to brace for their shredding.

missmolly: "Mike, looking at your first photo, was the water really that color? I've never seen that color in a northern lake. "
It's sand that you are seeing. Water is crystal clear. I caught that bass about 10 feet off the beach.

Tho she had an extra arm that helped her land it.
missmolly, the three armed bass fisherwoman…
And that’s not fair!
"
Oh, yeah, that's my friend's arm, but it does look like mine. Good eye, Scat!
