While completing the 360 rod portage at Basswood falls on Tuesday, my group came across a healthy-looking black/brown/white dog. Does anyone have more information about that him/her? I’m contacting the rangers as well, but it really bothers me that I didn’t force it to get in my canoe and come along for the rest of the ride.

I haven’t seen anything posted yet. Hopefully we don’t…
Don’t feel bad, hind site and second guessing is easy after the fact and who knows maybe it was just ahead of it’s owners and if you took it they would be stressed right now still looking for it. It’s literally a coin flip on what the right intervention should be in that situation.
Dogs run off randomly for what appears to be no reason all the time. They aren’t people, they don’t reason and think like people and even human beings react irrationally under stress. Dogs can just run off randomly for miles if they are spooked by loud noises, get out of sight of their owners, are in an unfamiliar area, see something they want to chase, smell something interesting. My brothers dog just did this couple of years ago Dog is 5, easy going, doesn’t spook easily, was in the woods with the kids at my parents place…a place he goes all the time but this section of the woods was slightly different. Kids knocked a branch down, wasn’t even loud or near the dog but he was on the other side of a bush and couldn’t see what they were doing and just took off running…kids couldn’t call him back. 5 hours later of searching a farmer called us 7 miles away he had found him…we were lucky the farmer grew up with my brother and knew the dog. Even then He had to capture him…he was completely wild and disoriented.
Never has been like this again and never did anything like this before…we were very lucky. Everyone thinks it’s gonna happen to someone else’s dog. Be careful. I know we were very distraught…I think my bothers and I each put in 10-15 miles of hiking that day looking for him.

OMGitsKa: "No more dog posts please. It's too much for the forum to handle. "
Just wait until I post my “Cats in the BWCA” thread.

airmorse: "So the dog was lost then?"
Yes a lost dog that ran away during a thunderstorm. Someone posted in our facebook group:
"The dog ended up coming with us for the day on Tuesday. We got him dry and fed and he slept in my tent. On Wednesday morning, at about 8am, the owner of the dog came paddling by our camp to find his dog, Finn, wagging his tail on the shore. He was so happy to find him and very thankful that we took him with us and took care of him. Apparently, Finn ran off during a thunderstorm on Sunday and got lost. He ran from their camp in Moose Bay and we found him Tuesday on the portage between Upper basswood falls and Wheelbarrow falls. Poor pup was so far away from home, lost, hungry, wet and cold. What a happy ending though!"

Cool beans.
Yeah, tough call.
Personally I would have waited a while, then probably get attached, then take it.
Because I'm probably solo and not on an ambitious trip. It has a better chance of a reunion if I get involved. It's wolf territory. I'm a sucker for happy endings with dogs. But I can see why others would hold off on doing anything.

Glad for another happy ending.
Both of my current dogs are sensitive to loud noises, including thunder. That is one of the reasons I will not bring them to the BW.

Both of my dogs are complete idiots. That is the reason I don't bring them in.
Love them anyway and REALLY glad this dog is reunited with it's family.
We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.

Just a hint for everyone who has skittish dogs from loud noises.
Depending on how old they are and their distance and tolerance for loud noises are.You can correct that with some distant gun fire. I've done a few puppies starting them about 100' away and fire. Obviously you need someone on leash with the pup and telling them how good they are after the shot. Wait about 2 mins walk a bit closer and fire again. Repeat until you are next to the pup. I find the 410 the right amout of noise.

My dog is fine under the gun, gets out bird hunting 10-12 times a season, but runs to his kennel or up my leg every time there is a clap of thunder or blast of fireworks. He clearly can understand the differences. Though, for awhile I swear he didn’t want to flush birds cause he knew I’d fire the gun.
