Can anyone tell me about waterfalls on streams or rivers entering Brule Lake?

last year we came down through the Cone Lakes and exited Brule at the east end to Vernon. There are some shallow rapids/stream entering Brule from the Cones as I recall. There is a lot of water flowing out of the east end of Brule to Vernon (the Brule River). There is a lot of elevation change (drop) going toward Vernon. And you can definitely hear the crashing water. But I never found a "waterfall". Only a fast moving stream. There are a bunch of little paths/game trails off the portage but I only explored a few as I had a big pack on. We camped on Vernon at the outlet of the river and someone has constructed a cool "hot tub" like area. Even in July-or was it August? the water was cool.

TG you just needed to go a little bit further to find the waterfalls.
Well worth the effort.

They are about 6-8 feet high but you can sit under the falls and get a good cooling off in. Some small soak holes buit no real place to swim.

We followed a trail from the portage down the creek to the falls; but there are some "deer path" trails midway on the portage. Probably do less damage by following trail from portage.

Thanks for the tip. Our party ranges from 30 to 60 in age. We will be spending 4 days at Brule in order to not to do any portages, so we're looking for some cool day trips.

Are there brook trout in any of the streams flowing into Brule?

A trip North on the Cone lakes is well worth the trip in terms of scenery and not at all difficult. I didn't take the time to check out the site, but the far Eastern end of S. Cone looked like a great setting.

last fall we did the same as tg and followed a rough trail down to the sound of rapids and found this--
the creek spread out in places and along the shore ran under the rocks.we did not do too much exploring as the sky was graying over and we just wanted some photos for my canoe buddy who was on his first trip.next time i would leave in the AM and make a day out of looking around the creek and Vernon Lake..

The falls on the East end to Vernon are beautiful but can be challenging to get to. I recommend following the shore of Brule North from the portage to Vernon and then following a path. The water flows under rocks in some places. Pretty cool. There is an outlet to S. Temperance on the West end. Nothing spectacular. The portage trail runs right next to it. The water coming out of the Cones is farily flat. I have paddled all the way to within 10 feet of North Cone without a portage. Not much fast water but it is a very beautiful route. Worth checking out.I have stayed twice on the island on S. Cone that fraxius is talking about. Very nice!

Kansas, no brook trout in streams. Check out these maps: trout fishing in NE MN
