Reports are trickling in (sorry, couldn’t resist) of road washouts in Cook and Lake counties after some very significant rainfall over the last couple of days. If you have Arrowhead plans for the next week or so, it might be prudent to check on road conditions:

Superior National Forest (from its Facebook page):

“ Recent heavy rains have impacted infrastructure and roadways on the SuperiorNF. Engineering staff are currently accessing damages. Roads impacted include Shoe Lake Rd (FR 313), Trout Lake Rd (FR 140), and S. Brule River Rd (FR 325). County roads may be impacted as well, along with other FS roads.

In addition, Gunflint Ranger Districts office phones are down. Tofte Ranger District administration area is currently closed.

Thank you for your patience. We will update more as we receive further information.”

In my view, this spring has brought a lot of rain all over the midwest. Its been hard to find 2 or 3 non rainy days in sequence to get much outdoor work done. The good news is that it is hopefully ending drought conditions in the midwest.

From NWS DLH morning discussion 5/1

Rivers remain elevated
across northern MN with both the Vermilion River at Crane Lake
and South Kawishiwi River near Ely being near action stages

The northern 1/3rd of Minnesota has been getting more rain and had more snow than further south.

You will want this one also if you don’t have it. I use it routinely to spot overnight lows, etc. Disable the default NWS Hazards option and select Observations:
