Made a decision to get some hands on experience before I dive into my project. North House has a class April 27 - May 2 on cedar strip boat construction-techniques & fundamentals. I figured that the price for tuition would be money well spent.

On my return from GM, I will pick up my strips at Duluth from "Woodcanoe". I hope to test drive his Merlin that was built with a straight keel-line.

It was over in a flash and on the 7th day we rested. Many times I took a double take on what we had done. If you have the opportunity to spend time at North House, do it.

Our project was an 18 foot USCA Cruiser. Our class had 7 students from France, Wisconsin, Ontario, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Norway. Our instructor was Ken Koscik (a great teacher and story teller).

Along the way, I learned many tricks of the trade. It was a memorable experience and one that has me ready to get started....... garage expansion in the works, and plans are in hand for the NW Merlin (1985 plans) with no rocker.

That is exACTLY how I stripped up the bottom of the 38 Special (straight bottomed Merlin). I'd probably do it that way again. I'm getting close to that stage on the Freedom so it's decision time pretty soon.

I have project progress photos of that 38 special (larger twin sister of the older "no rocker" Merlin) if you are interested.

Keep us up to date on your progress!
