One of my favorites. My son's buddy was crossing a boggy stretch of the portage from Sultry to Silence in Quetico and he took a misstep.

Thanks Bumabu! It has been my pleasure watching her grow up in the North Woods.

I did that once on the portage from Kawishiwi to Square - except I had the canoe. I went waist deep in mud and couldn't move. I didn't want anyone to see me in that predicament - or, much worse, take a picture of me. I was only able to get out by rolling myself into the canoe (which, when I set it down, was at eye level). Anyway, I can relate to this picture.

Joy is a great teacher, but so is dispair. Wonder is a great teacher, but so is confusion. Hope is a great teacher, but so is disillusionment. And life is a great teacher, but so is death. To deny yourself any of those in any aspect is not experiencing life totally.

Very cool pic.
I'm not a critic by any means, but I like the way the colors of the pack & canoe contrast with the water & trees. Cool beans!"
I agree- has a "Hamm's Beer" old-style kind of look to it...

Portage on Kawishiwi River headed south. Watch where and how you step. and it is steeper than the picture shows. I could not imagine trying to climb it in the rain. "
Another picture of that portage. Too bad my fat head is in the way, but my brother is resting the back of the canoe on the top of the hill and notice his 6 foot tall son below his feet. It's a steep climb!

I had wayyyyyy too many to choose from and there's tons of memory-making shots above, but I laugh out loud whenever I see this one. Little kiddos trying to do their own canoe "carry" on a very short portage.

"Portage Babes" doing a two person carry around the rapids on Hog creek. Neither one had ever portaged a canoe alone and I wasn't up to it, so for that short one, they just carried it - and went swimming afterwards. It was a blast.

My youngest son Jeremiah,( the personification of portage monkey) on his first BWCA trip. As soon as he hit the trail I couldn't keep shoes on him. He insisted on carrying something, so I made up this pack basket with small, necessary items for him to carry. He was 6. He's 19 now.

ducks, how old is your littlest one? Kind of looks similar in age to mine, though perhaps she's older (mine is 2 3/4). How did she do? We're going to do that same day trip in later August.

nojobro.. she will be 3 in Aug. That day she did ok. She was in a "mood" but it was still a blast and not bad enough to make us not want to do it again :) She was awesome the day before when we entered at Lake One and went into the Kawishiwi River. As I'm sure you know, you just don't know for sure what you're going to get from them :)
Both girls loved having their own paddles. That was a "must". We brought rope with to tie them to the canoe but tried without and both girls made it through 2 days without dropping their paddle in the lake.
There was an island on the way to the pictos that had a nice flat area that we stopped at for lunch and our 5 year old caught some fish from shore.

Thanks, ducks! She will be about the same age as yours was by the time we go on the trip. I will definitely have a paddle for her, and a regular one for our 11-year old, too. We will also be doing the Lake One/Kawishiwi day trip. I will look for that flat rock on the way to the pictos!
I'm so excited to go...

Kip's picture has been my favorite on here since I first saw it 2 years ago. That picture and TR is what got me so anxious to get my girls in the Bdub. They've done daytrips and now my 5 year old will sleep in the Bdub for the first time in a week.
Congrats to all 3 winners! Great job!
