Unfortunately I can't seem to find the few pics that we actually got out of that disposable. If I do find them I will update the report.

That was a fun trip report! I'm surprised she handled the bears so well. What a trooper for a first camping trip...right into the wilderness!
That's a real kick to the teeth to get attitude when you ask for a match or two. Sorry to hear that.

You can see above...
I FOUND THE PICS from that drowned disposable.
From Upper Left then Clockwise:
"Look! I'm in Canada!"
"This leap might explain why getting back out of the "tub" was a little challenging"
"I love the views in the Boundary Waters"
"Quick! It quit raining! I'll stop swatting while you snap the pic"

Rob,
That was a fun read! Especially liked your line near the end, "...We had to pay for the lost food pack but we put it on a credit card then reported it stolen. The credit card company actually paid for it!"
I had to read that twice before getting it :-).
You aren't a lawyer are you? My late dad was and he always told me don't give any more info than necessary unless you're asked a specific question.

We were asked at one point to fill out a report. We described the perp as taller than 6' with dark hair. We were honest with the credit card company and they said it fell within their policy for lost or theft!

I loved this trip report! Full of adventure, mishaps, and still they are together (with a family yet!) Justine is indeed a fine tripper.
We prefer to go in mid-June, and I can tell you if you had come to OUR campsite we would have not only offered you some matches, but also some food! :-)
Thanks for sharing. I hope you do take your family to the BWCA sometime soon. And I hope this time you don't have any bear visits.

Rob - That is one of those "We laugh about it now, but..." Amazing that you got the girl after all that. I would have guessed she rented a car and left you at the outfitters, never to be seen again!
So I suppose everything has been pretty much better since then because it couldn't get much worse. :)

That was a crazy trip. I had a similar thing happen to me and my girfriend a long time ago but we only were 6 hours away from the takeout.
We were left with coffee and butter I believe. The bear didn't like the coffee but got it gooey from trying it and we had put the butter under water for the night.
We drew pictures of cheeseburgers and chocolate shakes and fries in our journal when we stopped for a break on the way out. :) The bear thing is no laughing matter when it happens. Thanks for posting your story.

Great trip report. Very enjoyable reading. I also would have offered you some food as well as the matches. You two survived a trip like that together, you can get through anything! Good Luck on future trips with your kids!

-Talk about resilient! You could have headed back but no! you pressed on with far less food & stuff.
-Big cool factor that you waited 10 yrs to post your story and it still reads nicely.
-I hope folks who refused you a few matches, or a PB&J, get to read this too and remember. Geez, how can people be like that way out in the woods? sheesh! Just how many panhandlers frequent the wilds?
