A builder in Big Fork MN called me a few days ago about some long clear black ash for gunwales.

I decided to pick up a few boards myself but he has several more. I haven't seen it yet but it sounds nice. He has a few 19' and a bunch of 17' + boards. They have random widths and are 5/4 thick. $2.75 per b.f.

His email is oddjob.rooney the at symbol gmail then the dot com.

His name is Mark. I spoofed up the email so the spambots don't find his email address. He will be in Duluth MN tomorrow and is delivering some to me.

I wanted to keep this post off the for sale forum because it's a secret between builders :)

Do you know if he can get full length cedar as well?

No he can't get that but I can help you out. I know a guy in Canada not to far from International Falls, MN that can saw you full length white cedar. It's as rare as gold. I used to buy trailer loads of the stuff.

white cedar is superior to red cedar for boat building. It is more flexible and lighter in weight. The primary reason builders use red cedar is its availability. Long clear white cedar is unheard of and the sawyers have no market for cutting white cedar that long.

Send me an email if you want the contact.

Full length meaning 17' or so?? Clear?

Would you do the contacting and the buyer (me) do the driving? I am heading out on the road in the AM. Will look for your post on my return

Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe,

I think he sold all of it already. He stopped by my place and I bought what he had on his truck but he didn't bring everything in stock. I told him I was looking for 4 or 5 boards for future use. Some of the boards had a few knots but he did have some 19' clear stuff.

You would have to contact him yourself if you were looking for any. Perhaps he can get more?
