I have been contemplating upgrading my set up for some time and I have a couple of options so I am curios what you guys think you would do in my situation. Right now I have an ENO double nest with the dry fly rain tarp a guardian bug net and an Ember underquilt. My reason for upgrades are fairly simple, I would like a quicker set up and take down also would like a flatter lie and the tarp has kept me dry but I would like more coverage from wind or really bad weather, finally the Ember has not kept me warm and pads slide all over the place. First option would be to sell the whole ENO set up and start over with a Blackbird with a superfly, in this option I would have to opt for a pad between the layers do to cost. The next option would be to buy a new underquilt for the ENO and switch it out to Whoopie slings and a ridge line and get a better tarp. I wish I could just keep what I have and buy a blackbird and superfly keeping the ENO for a loaner or back up. What would you do??? Sorry to be so long in this post.

I started out with a doublenest ENO. I then removed the suspension and installed whopie slings. I also have the dryfly but wanted more coverage so I bought a CCS tarp 12X10 size. I installed a structural ridgeline at 100". This gives me a flat lay. I wanted to buy a Ember underquilt but they were always on back order. I went with a kick ass quilt new river from arrowhead equipment. I had Paul sew in extra insultex when he made it and I'm now good to down to 20 degrees. It is so warm now. I also have the ENO bug net that works good. I spent some time getting it right for me.

As for you, there are some fine hammocks out there. The Warbonnet Blackbird is a good choice. I have never heard anything bad about it. That says s lot. Everybody loves them and you can't go wrong. It would be hard for me to change now to a different hammock. If you want to try something on your ENO install a ridgeline at 100" from end to end and see how you like the lay. You can use any cord for this. If it works great, then get a warmer underquilt and sell the ember. Next upgrade to whoopee slings and throw away your original stuff. Hope this helps.

You can only do what you can afford. In theory you can save money by DIY but you have to get it right the first time :)

A safe place to start would be with the tarp. You can use your existing rig under a new tarp no problem. Then when you are ready for more upgrades you have that out of the way. I use a CCS 10x12 tarp myself. The advantage of this, besides how well its made, is I can use it for things other than hanging over a hammock A-frame style. It can be rigged almost like a superfly. That said, if you're always going to rig it A-frame over a hammock then a tarp made for that will work out better. Just know you have the option.

I doubt the ember will work at all with a blackbird, not without modification. Underquilts aren't cheap. You could use a new UQ with your existing hammock, so that could be your second step.

If you're considering a double layer BB then you could put some CCF between the layers. Lots of folks do this. Its cheap and will get you into that new hammock. It's not as comfortable as a UQ but you're still not wrestling with a pad inside the hammock.

What you make your step two should depend on how comfortable you are in your ENO hammock. If you want to get flat, go for the blackbird and us a pad. If you're ok with your current lay then you could get the UQ first.

Just my thoughts...

My thoughts: Well, I set a budget for gear after I went a bit crazy a few years ago and spent a pile-o-dough re-equipping. This year I ordered a brand new down UQ. So my budget is done.
I would go ahead with the WBBB dbl (1.1 or 1.7, whichever is right for you) and get the superfly. The use ccf pads for the next year.
Next year you can order a UQ. All the cottage manuactureres have Black Friday sales or you can buy a used one.

Then next year....a cuben tarp...

Or keep your eye out for the Guide Gear 12x12 tarp. It has been available at this time of year the last couple of years.
Dang! Not

I waited and waited on that Gear Guide Tarp, and finally caved in and called them to see if they were going to get more in, and I was told they were discontinued. This was about 3 months ago. It is possible that I got faulty information too.
