You're her Uncle - Uncle Moose!

Piwi is so cute. I really enjoy seeing dogs on adventure trips.

She is cute! (And I'm completely unbiased, of course.)

Piwi's big adventure. I loved it! As a child of the 80's that last line made me groan and laugh at the same time. Thanks for sharing the story.

Love it, what kind of dog is she? Kinda looks like Rat terrier? I have a couple rats.

So I ineptly started two threads on this report. The other one is in the Listening Point forum, and the question of what kind of dog Piwi is came up there. So I'll cut an paste my response from there -

Piwi is a certified mutt, part of a litter from a mom that was abandoned at the Ely Vet Clinic when pregnant. Mom was primarily Springer Spaniel and probably part GSP. Dad was unknown. Piwi has characteristics of both her mom's breeds, but I'm guessing she has some other stuff mixed in too. Very nose-oriented, intelligent, energetic, and webbed toes too.

The Ely Vet Clinic found good homes from the mom and all 8 puppies.

Addendum - Mooseplums, looking at English Pointers, it's quite possible that one is in Piwi's bloodline too. The Springer Spaniel look was very pronounced in the mom, but the pups all had much shorter hair like Piwi.

This was a successful first trip for Piwi in my book. Nice photos.

Makes me want to get a pet! Haven't done paddling before and will be heading to BWCA in June for my first ever canoe trip. You can't imagine how useful your trip reports are. Thanks for those detailed reports. I sift through your reports and pictures to help prepare myself. One thing I haven't been able to find in stores is the rain tarp you use with that long pole! Any ideas on where I could get one?

Best.

hithit, the rain tarp is made by Cooke Custom Sewing, cookecustomsewing.com. They are also sold at Piragis in Ely, although possibly without the CCS label but made by them. They may seem pricey when you look at them, but they are incredibly light, strong, and made to last.

I'm not sure exactly where I got the tarp pole, but something similar is sold in a number of places. It's three parts, with a little ratchet-like brace that lets you adjust size. You might look at the Cooke Custom Sewing site to see if they have something similar. The pole is a bit heavy and thick, more than tent poles because it has to be rigid. You can also rig a rain tarp without it, but it helps to rig it right.

You should also get a few heavy duty stakes for the tarp, one to stake down the line where the pole is, and some for staking sides for fine-tuning, or when a tree is not available for a corner.

Last but not least, learn to tie the truckers hitch and bowline hitch to rig your tarp. The CCS tarp comes with a handy cheat sheet about these knots and how to use them rigging.

Congratulations on a great addition to the family. The reason they call dogs man's best friend is so evident when you have one. Many happy trips to you and yours, Ho Ho.

Looks like Piwi will be going back! Fast and furious trip, but still looked like a good time. I remember my dogs first night in a tent, she looked at me like, where am I suppose to sleep? :)
Thanks for sharing.

I love the pic of you and Piwi in the evening paddle. That is a good shot also of the pad you tape down for Piwi's comfort.
