Didn't want to hijack the cracker post so I thought I'd post this here.
Some of you may have heard of these. For those who have not, your in for a real treat.

Kentucky firecrackers
Prep time: 5 mins
Ingredients

1 Box of Saltine Crackers OR (my favorite) use GOOD Oyster Crackers
1 1/3 cups canola oil
1/8 cup crushed red pepper flakes (grind finer if you like)
1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 packet ranch dressing mix (powdered form)

Instructions

1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
2. Pour over the contents of one whole box of saltine crackers.
3. Using your hands, toss crackers gently to coat.
4. Store in an airtight container.
5. Best if allowed to sit overnight, to allow seasonings to blend.

Contrary to what you may think, these will NOT get soggy. They remain very crisp and are highly addictive.

How do I tell a good oyster cracker from bad? :)

Sounds good. How spicy are they?

LOL. I should have said a good quality brand name cracker.

As far as spicy goes, well, they have a bit of a kick to them. If your not into spicy foods, start with just 1 Tbl of red pepper and see how ya like it. You can always add more if ya like.

We make these when we have guests/family over and they always go over really well. Sorta like the Lays Chip commercial. Ya can't eat just one.

Although red pepper flakes are usually a combination of peppers, cayenne would work just fine. Do NOT use the same amount of Cayenne as you would red pepper flakes though. I'd start with 1 tsp of Cayenne and see how you like it. Always easy to add more, but hard to take away once you added it. lol.

Made a batch last night with good oyster crackers. Put in half the amount of oil and one teaspoon of ground red pepper. Turned out very tasty and spicy. Oily though.

Yeah the first time I did this recipe with Oyster crackers, it was a tad too oily as well. The recipe does work perfect when using the saltines. If I remember correctly, when I made these over this past Christmas, I used two bags of Oyster crackers in place of the one box of saltines.

And ya know? after another day they're less oily. Must'ave soaked in. I like 'em.

These sound great. I make a similar recipie with pretzel sticks and then bake them at 300 for about four or five minutes.

Thanks!

Just made these last night with two bags of the Premium brand oyster crackers. I also used 1 C of organic sesame oil instead. They taste great! Excellent snack and cheap.
