I used to go [when I was a whole heap younger] on solo trips to the BWCA years ago but I hadn't made any recent trips until this spring when I went for a short week, really felt good. When I told the wife I was going again the last week of Sept. she just gave me a sort of wicked smile, grabbed the phone and called my insurance agent and raised my life insurance, should I be concerned? I've got several questions to ask but my son and I are leaving for Ontario this weekend and I wont have time to get back on the magic screen till we get back, hopefully I can get my daughter to type up a trip report, cause it would take me longer to type one up than it would take an old fat guy to portage a mile.

At least she didn't say no :). But I'd do my own food prep ;).

"Let me know when your heading home."
She was used to my solo tendencies before that.

Although my wife isn't an outdoor person, she understands my need to do what I do. Does she worry? Of course. That is why I have a SPOT and survivor benefits on my pension.

I asked Mrs Plums if she worries when I go solo and she said "No, I know you can handle yourself out there."
Perhaps secretly she is raising my life insurance....Hmmmm

Same here. My wife is the greatest.

Our wives should form an online support group. :-)

My Mom worries a lot more than my wife. She knows my skill level, and she knows how much I prep for trips. She worries, but the SPOT helps keep it all in check.

My Mom told me not to go. I told her I would be safe, that I love her and I will call her when I am done. Hope I don't get grounded ;).

Things can happen, but a heck of a lot more people are killed on highways that are on vacations.

I'm doing my first solo next summer and my husband is hesitant on me going by myself but he will support me because he knows its important to me.
Besides I will have a Spot and a big knife with me.

Nice jeepgirl! I'm sure there will be some worry, but with some good planning you'll be fine. There is something about solo tripping that gets into your blood so be careful or you'll be planning annual solo trips. :)

How long a solo trip are you planning for your first one?

Hey jeepgirl, my wife drives a 2000 Sahara (wrangler). It's got 65,000 miles on it. She won't ever trade it in she says. I had a '79 CJ-7 when I was a youngun. Most fun I ever had. Are you the Wrangler type?

As for soloing - I've done 6 now and they get a lot easier each time you do it. My only advice is to go as light as you comfortably can and always watch your step. Also, watch out for the heebie jeebies.

Planning on a 4 day solo. Enter on lake 1 and base camp on one of the numbered lakes. I have been to the BWCA numerous times always with friends.

As for Jeeps, we have 2 Wranglers. A 97 built Wrangler and a semi built 07 Wrangler. Both are taken off road as much as we can.

my wifes first vehicle was a `73 cj5. if toyota made something like that now, id trade in my xB tomorrow.

Sounds like a nice easy "shakedown" trip for your first solo.

I keep hoping they'll put a removable/convertible top on the FJ Cruiser.

I've had my eye on the FJ Cruiser too. I'm a Toyota guy and why not since my 94 truck has never given me problems.

I'm starting to see a lot of those FJ's around here. The coolest one I've seen was all black - top and all including rims and tires. It looked like a big bug.

fj's have the worst blind spot issue ever recorded in modern history. :)

Need a better mirror. Or, make a new window. I've never been in one yet. I might be in the market in 6 months.

Good for you. He better get used to it. Seventeen years ago I did my first one.

I am planning solo fifty two for January.

He is fine with it as long as I bring a spot and check in every day.

11/11/2012 05:39PM
ive used a SPOT in the past but ive alway had a PLB along too.

what would be his reaction be if the SPOT happened to fail while youre on the trip, and the daily updates stopped?

something to think about.

Ditto on the FJ blind spot and generally poor view rearwards. I was pretty fixed on it till a test drive and ended up with a RAV 4.

I believe that. Over 10 years ago we had the 2 door beefed up off road version of the Chevy Blazer w/ the spare tire on the back and it had a horrible blind spot. Just looking at the FJ it looks like it would be bad. That Blazer was the biggest POS ever. Bought it new and in the 4 years we owned it we had to fix more than all other vehicles I've owned put together.

My wife and I have talked about me doing a solo for 2 or 3 years now. The main thing that's kept me from it is that I have 2 young kids and a wife that like going so it's hard for me to get away to do it alone :) Someone always wants to go with.

After taking a trip w/ just my 7 year old last summer I'm sure my wife won't be as worried if I go solo.

It's starting to look like a solo could very well happen for me next summer. My wife is in the No News is Good News camp and I will bring a PLB instead of a SPOT if I bring something. I'm getting very excited about the possibility.

12/04/2012 07:32PM
Hey ducks... Good luck on the possible solo. But I'd do anything to be back in your shoes with a family that likes and wants to go with. My kids would love to go with now, but they are full of commitments and such so I'm left to the solo thing. Pout! :)
