I just got back from Alpine. Did 8 Days.
Weather was PERFECT for fishing, we were MORE than prepaired, we fished HARD...
We didnt get on 'em. I have fished Alpine for a very long time and this was by far the hardest we have had it on a lake that produces huge walleyes and lots of fish.
We ended up fishing alpine for 6 of the days. early morning---all day---evening and some night fishing. Everything worked...nothing worked well. We had only 4 fish over 25" caught maybe 40 fish in the 18-25" range and some small fish. Not exactly what we were expecting.
We found almost all the fish we did catch in 18-22 feet of water. We caught some on jigs and leeches (most of the catch) some on crawlers, some under slip bobbers, some on cranks and some pulling bottom rigs.
Always caught them on the wind blow side of lake. Time of day didnt matter as it was 100% cloudy for the entire trip.
We would have caught 1/4 of the fish we did get if we didnt have the vexlar and hummingbird.
Smallmouth were active and BIG, but we tried to stay away from them as we were targeting walleye...still caught 40 or so.
Zero northerns (first time ever, while walleye fishing on Alpine)
1 Huge whitefish.
Biggest walleye was 27 1/2" and the width of a truck. (smallest "big fish" of any Alpine trip so far)
I think the biggest factor was the wind. it was windy enough for a good walleye push, but the wind changed every day. My only guess, and ive been doing this for a long time, is that the wind changes was keeping them scattered and always on the move.
Fished jasper for 1 day for lakers. paddled 3 ways over the entie lake at 40 to 60 feet...Zero fish. heard they were getting some in at 40 feet earlier in the week, but no one we talked to hooked up on the day we fished for them.
Advice. October? Jig fish (1/4 jig) with leeches (if you can find them now or farther south and keep them alive) or crawlers. Bring a flasher and start shallow and move out until they hit. Early and late can be magical on that lake if you dont mind searching for the sweet spot.
If you PM me an email address ill mark some spots on the map for you to start at. There is one in particular that has put out 80% of our fish over 30".

Sirlips,
I'd be very interested in getting some spots on Alpine. I have only fished that lake once in 11 years of being in the BW.
I'm not sure how to get your email address, could you email me?

Thanks!

Thank you sirlips for the great info! I'm heading up tomorrow to Sag and subsequently Alpine. If you could point me in the right direction on Alpine or Sag for some nice eyes or lakers, that would be fantastic. My e-mail is ehusevold@msn.com
Thanks!
Thanks!

Mr. Sirlips. I would also appreciate your expert advice. I tried contacting you through your TAKO website, but wasn't successful. Alpine is our usual traveling area. Have caught plenty of pike, but I am a novice walleye angler. My son (10) has caught the biggest walleye (28") to date, but that was more luck than knowledge.
Thanks for all you have contributed thus far!!

Sirlips,
If you have the will-power to send out one more e-mail, it would be greatly appreciated.
I'll be taking a novice fishing group into this area, and if they don't catch fish they don't eat! (scheduled meal for one night is a fish dinner). Thanks for any tips and advice!

Sorry to bother you, would you mind sending me some of those spots on alpine? We're heading up in the last week of July and we're bringing four kids aged 8,8,6,4 (three adults). Obviously fishing isn't a priority but I'm gonna try not to waste what little precious fishing there is on paddling around!!

We went to alpine in October and it was extremely windy the whole trip. Going in we had to camp short to avoid the big waves . The next day we made it in and got the 5 star site not far from the portage from seagull. The fishing was difficult to say the least! We managed to catch some northerns, smallies, and two whitefish. We ate one of the whitefish. We tried everything to get walleyes to no avail! We were stumped . We jigged shallow, and deep. We trolled . We wonder what we could have done to get a few. Still bugs me! And to top it off, we had to get up super early on our departure day to avoid the rollers on seagull ! We still had to paddle the shoreline all the way around to the south and southeast. May try again sometime,we will see! Take care, P.s. Sir lips ,are you still around ???

We had similar luck. Went in on Seagull last September (last week). Temps were warm. Last day the wind and rollers picket up. We tried everything we had. . .including fish finders. Could not get any walleye. In talking with the outfitter we are going to return the week after Labor Day this year, base camp on Seagull and push in to Alpine and the smaller lakes. Any ideas would be really appreciated. We have had two years with only a few fish (smallmouth and pike). Both years we went late September to see the fall colors.
