Woke up to a beautiful morning got temporarily slowed down by a beaver damn on the way to the portage into Walter, it is once again two short ones with a small pond in between. The portages into Elizabeth wasn’t too long or bad. The portage from Elizabeth to Jesse finally got us though. It’s a little over ½ mile with about 300’ of vertical rise and very rocky with muddy spots. Three of our crew got minor injuries on this portage. One of the adults pulled her shoulder when the wind caught a twisted the canoe. My daughter strained her back and another girl sprained her ankle badly. The injuries probably wound up worse than they would have been because all pushed through to the end of the portage with them. This portage would be our last single portage of the trip. We assessed our injuries and had lunch in the canoes on Jesse before continuing on. We lucked out on the portage from Jesse to Maria. We ran into a nice family of four from Seattle. Their son was a tall strong young man and piggybacked our injured girl through much of this portage. She was about 6’ and over 150#, so not a small load! They stopped for their lunch on Maria and this was the last we saw of them. Quetico human count 7. We managed to get most of the packs across in one carry on the portage between Maria and Pickerel Narrows. Our interpreter grabbed the last pack and I portaged our girl with the sprained ankle. I had my doubts about being able to do it, as I am in my 40’s now, but you surprise yourself with what you can do on the trail. From there we canoed back to the campsite that we used our first night in Quetico. It had warmed up some, a little too warm for me in the mid 80’s.
